I'm getting my children started on their romanitas early: The middle name of my second child, born this morning, is Augustus. My first boy's name is Sebastian, which has the same meaning in Greek as Augustus does in Latin.

I read somewhere that groups of Romans traveled to Sparta to watch boys being whipped as part of their "traditional" training. I'm sorry, I can't remember the source of that story.

Were ordinary Romans permitted iron weapons like swords in their own homes (if they could afford them)? I imagine this varied according to the epoch: yes in the early Republic, definitely not during the Principate.
