FASTI for Iove's Day, AUC MMDCCLXI.IX.IV

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Wed Sep 03, 2008 11:04 pm

Avete, Quirites -

For tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 4th, 2008:

FASTI: Pridie nonas Septembres [C]

[C] (Comitia, yes; Courts, yes)

From the SVR Calendar:

    - Ludi Romani, in honor of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, beginning in the time of Tarquinius Priscus.
    - This occasion was marked by a great procession, described by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, escorting Jupiter from His temple of the Capitolium through the Forum and Velabrium to the Circus Maximus. The procession was composed of the City’s youth, troops of dancers and musicians, athletes and priests, displaying the sacred vessels of the temple and images of the Gods.
    - The games included horse races and chariot races, boxing and wrestling, as well as other athletic and theatrical competitions.
    - O Jupiter Capitolinus, to You I pray, I entreat You, who the Roman people have named Optimus after Your kindness and Maximus after Your great power. (Cicero, Domo 144).
- Cicero returns from exile, 57 BCE.
- Fall of the Western Roman Empire 476 CE. [Should this not be a Dies Ater, for us?]

Hint, Hint

Postby Aldus Marius on Thu Sep 04, 2008 3:57 am

Salve, mi Iohanne, et Salvete omnes!

The Ludi Romani sound like an excellent time to revive our own Ludi Societatis, especially the chariot-races. Conditor Gnae, I believe we have the requisite number of participants, or very nearly so; could you check this in the Ludi Forum for me? And, if it be true, then as one of the very few Roman-aedilis things your Webmaster-aedilis has actually gotten to do, might I ask that we "Let the Games Begin"? (Pretty please?) >({(:-)

As for dies atri, by 476 CE there were neither magistrates nor priests of the Religio to declare one. There is no mos maiorem for this one; the day can be anything we choose to make of it. Shall we observe it as a day of mourning; a day of remembrance; a day to commemorate the revival movement; or simply as a day to reflect on all that links us with the ancients, and to assure them that we carry the lamp with us still? Discussion welcome!

In amicitia et fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

Salvete iterum!

I like those, mi Iohanne...a bit of both, perhaps?

For the Ludi Romani, I could also kick off the New RP Thread, if anyone wants to play.

And I will shortly post a list of "Silly Community Things" [sic Conditor Draco] that might just tickle some fancies after all. We've had a few newcomers since mid-'05, ya know! >({|;-)

- The festival first introduced drama to Rome based on Greek drama.
- The curule aediles were in charge of the Ludi Romani. A procession from the Capitol to the Circus Maximus was followed by a sacrifice and then both theatrical productions and chariot races.

And from the SVR Calendar:

- Jupiter Stator in the Circus Flaminius, 146 BCE.
- Death of Eugenius, the last Pagan Emperor, 394 CE.

And for the Diem Saturnis, 9/6/08:

- Certain gods, including Iuppiter and Ianus, may not be named.
- These days are ill-omened to begin any new project, and any new project would necessarily begin by performing a rite calling for the assistance of the gods. Such religious rites, beginning something new, are not to be performed. NOTA BENE: Normal work would still be performed on dies atri, and as part of performing any work one performs rites for the patron deities, geni locii, and other appropriate deities. Likewise, the daily routine is also performed before the lararium.- New fire should not be struck.

And from the SVR Calendar:

- Ludi Romani: If You, Father of the Gods and of men, hold back our enemies, at least from this spot, delivering the Romans from their terror, and stay their shameful retreat, then this I vow to You, Jupiter Stator, that a holy precinct and shrine will be built in Your honor as a memorial to remind our descendents of how once the city of Rome was saved by Your aid. (Livy 1.12.6-7)

He hastens to sacrifice these tresses that once circled his shining face, happily to serve, in payment for a vow, if You judge that out of danger he will be. Preserve his youthful grace, though his hair is now shortened, and long may You keep him handsome. (Martial 9.17)

Ab Calendario nostro Societatis:

- Ieiunium Cereris: Fast of Ceres, decreed in 191 BCE, held in mourning for Proserpina’s passing.
- In Republican times, it was held every five years. (Livy 36.37.4)
- It became an annual event under Augustus.

Ut septemdierum spatium vobis felix sit. Have a good weekend.
