Salvete, Sodales Sociique -

The Fasti for tomorrow, Saturn's Day, 6/14/08 -

FASTI: ante diem XVIII Kalendas Quintiles [N] Ater

Nefastus [N]
    - comitia: no;
    - courts: no.
Ater (unlucky):
    - Try to avoid making journeys, starting new projects, or doing anything risky.
    - New fire should not be struck.
    - Certain gods, including Iuppiter and Ianus, may not be named.
    - These days are ill-omened to begin any new project, and any new project would necessarily begin by performing a rite calling for the assistance of the gods. Such religious rites, beginning something new, are not to be performed.
NOTA BENE: Normal work would still be performed on dies atri, and as part of performing any work one performs rites for the patron deities, geni locii, and other appropriate deities. Likewise, the daily routine is also performed before the lararium.
From the SVR Calendar for 6/14/08: -
Quinquatrus Minusculae festival: Tibicinae [flute-girls] feast with Jupiter.
And the Quinquatrus Minusculae is glossed at Mr. Thayer's Lacus Curtius thus:
There was also another festival of [the name Quinquatrus called] Quinquatrus Minusculae or Quinquatrus Minores ... on which the tibicines went through the city in procession to the temple of Minerva (Varro, de Ling. Lat. VI.17; Ovid. Fast. VI.651, &c.; Festus, p149, ed. Müller).

Fasti et 6/15 et 6/16/08

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Sun Jun 15, 2008 11:05 pm

Salvete, Sodales Sociique -

The Fasti for today, the Sun's Day, 6/15/08 -

FASTI: ante diem XVII Kalendas Quintiles [QSDF], id est 6/15/2008.
[QSDF] = Quando Stercus Delatum Fas. The day is Nefastus until the Temple of Vesta has been cleaned, but then Fastus.
Nefastus = Comitia: no; Courts: no.
Fastus = Comitia: no; Courts: yes.

    And from the SVR Calendar:

    N Quinquatrus Minusculae.
Vesta Clauditur: Quando Stercus Delatum Fas, the Temple of Vesta is closed; this is the day on which it is proper to carry out the dung and bird droppings from the temple of Vesta, which portion of the day is Nefastus (Varro L.L. 6.32).
But the prohibitions of sacred law end after Vesta’s temple is swept and closed, at which point the day becomes Fastus.

The Fasti for Moon's Day, 6/16/08 -

FASTI: ante diem XVI Kalendas Quintiles [C], id est 6/16/2008.
[C] Comitialis (comitia: yes; courts: yes)

And from the SVR Calendar's lore:

    - Destruction of the Serapium in Alexandria by Theophilus [bishop of Alexandria], 391 CE.
Additionally, from Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serapeum]:

"The Serapeum of Alexandria in Ptolemaic Egypt was a temple built by Ptolemy III (reigned 246–222 BC) and dedicated to Serapis, the syncretic Hellenistic-Egyptian god who was made the protector of Alexandria. [Notandum: Serapis is a Greek contraction of the names Osiris, in Egyptian Ausir or a similar form, the deity of resurrection, and Apis, Hape in Egyptian, a bull god.] By all of the detailed descriptions, the Serapeum was the largest and most magnificent of all temples in the Greek quarter of Alexandria. The destruction of the Serapeum was seen by many ancient and modern authors as representative of the triumph of Christianity over other religions and an instructive example of the attitude of the most educated Christian class to pagan learning. The modern historian sees it against the background of repeated mob violence in Alexandria, where the Greek quarter and the Jewish quarter had engaged in mob violence since the last century BCE and sets it in the complicated context of less spectacular violence in the city."

Fasti for Friday, 6/20/08, Dies Veneris

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:56 pm

Salvete -

Gratias tibi, Tiberii Draco; invocatus nihilominus meas iam omissiones correxisti!
Thanks for stepping in.

The Fasti for Friday, Veneris Dies, 06/20/08 --

Ante Diem XII Kalendas Quintiles, [C]
- Comitialis: Comitia, yes; Courts, yes.

Ex nostro Kalendario Societatis:
- Summanus, god of nocturnal heavens, near the Circus Maximus, 278 BCE.

- More on Summanus: He is the god of the nocturnal heavens or of the nocturnal thunder and lightning, a complement to Iuppiter, god of diurnal thunder and lightning. On ante d. XII Kal. Quint., cakes were offered to him at his temple located near the Circus Maximus.
The etymology of his name is disputed somewhat:
- From "... sub-manus (cf. mane, Matuta) for 'preceding the morningi.... it was once widely speculated to be from Summus Manium ithe greatest of the Manes'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter_Summanus
- From "summus, the highest ... of higher rank than Jupiter...." http://www.mythindex.com/roman-mythology/S/Summanus.html

Valete omnes.

Fasti for Saturn's Day, 06.21.08

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:46 am

Salvete has litteras legentes Romani omnes -

The Fasti for Saturday, 6/21/08, Dies Saturnis -

FASTI: ante diem XI Kalendas Quintiles [C], 6/21/2008
- C: Comitialis: Comitia, yes; Courts, yes.

This day, from the SVR Calendar:
- Battle of Lake Trasimene, 217 BCE.

Battle of Lake Trasimeno: Hannibal Barca's army destroys the Roman Army commanded by Consule Gaius Flaminius. Hannibal had maneuvered around Flaminius's army as he waited in camp for the arrival of the other consul, Gnaeus Servilius Geminus, and his forces. Finally, with Hannibal devastating the land, and Hannibal having cut Flaminius's communications to Rome, the rash Flaminius champing at the bit, and Germinus nowhere in sight, Flaminius bid his commanders march East to deal with Hannibal. Their route took them by Lake Trasimeno, along a narrow plain whose other border was the hills behind it. Contact was reported by the Roman vanguard, but the Roman force stayed strung out along the relatively narrow plain by the water. Then, as Hannibal's men "held them by the nose", the remaining weight of his forces emerged from the hills to the Roman's left, to the north, and "kicked them in the ass", as Patton would say - and in the spleen and kidneys, as it were. The surprise, the good ground, and the vulnerable formation of the Roman army all lent advantage to the Carthaginian-led army, and Flaminius's force was destroyed. It was a signal disaster for Roman arms, but it would not be the worst -- that would come later at Cannae.

    Rupilia Faustina who married consul Marcus Annius Verus;

Rupilia Annia who married Lucius Fundanius Lamia Aelianus consul of 116.
- Matidia would often travel with her uncle (Traianus) and assist him in decision making. Like her mother, throughout the Roman Empire, Matidia was honored with monuments and inscriptions in her name.
- On August 29 112, she received the title of Augusta.
- In 119 Matidia died, the Roman Emperor Hadrian delivered her funeral oration, deified her and granted her a temple and altar in Rome itself.

Gratias tibi ago!

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Jul 01, 2008 6:50 pm

Salve, mi Iohanne, et Salvete omnes!

Mi Iohanne, I really like the extra info you've been providing on the historical tid-bits! That's something I never had the energy to pursue. The Fasti don't feel like they've just been slapped up there to meet a deadline anymore; they stay to chat with us a while, and we are a little more Roman for the encounter.

Gratias tibi ago, amice!

In amicitia et fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

Salve, Marii - Glad you approve, Legate Peregrine! It's simply that I, myself, needed the information, since my Roman education is so hit-and-miss. (And I do hope people will let me know when I get it wrong, so that I will be able to make retractions and corrections if needed.)

And now - Let the next Diem Advenientem be announced:

=======

Fasti for Jove's Day, 7/3/08:

Fasti: ante diem V nonas Quintiles, [N] Religiosus

[N] The day is nefastus: Comitia, no; Courts, no.

From the SVR Calendar:
- Aquaelicium: In the heat of summer the pontifices called upon Jupiter Pluvius to bring rain by holding a pompa in which the lapis manalis, a cylindrical rain-stone, was rolled from the Temple of Mars in the Campus Martius through the Porta Capena to the Capitolium. Magistrates walked in the procession without their insignia and matrons followed barefoot.
- Constantine defeats Licinius at Hadrianopolis, 324 CE.

De Aquaelicio illo: Hmmm. A festival or observance to do with waters, aquae, and related to rain, as in Iuppiter Pluvius, 'Rainy Jupiter'.
Sed quid habet Wikipedia?
[There was] a ceremony called the aquaelicium (Latin: "calling the waters") which sought to produce rain in times of drought. During the ceremony, the pontifices had the stone [the lapis manalis] brought from its usual resting place, a temple of Mars near the Porta Capena, into the Senate. Offerings were made to Jupiter petitioning for rain, and water was ceremonially poured over the stone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_manalis

Kindred Spirit

Postby Aldus Marius on Wed Jul 02, 2008 4:27 am

Salve, mi Iohanne!

A rain-stone! And me being widely reckoned by my more animistic friends to be a Thunder-spirit. It rained like gangbusters in the Mojave while I was there. A five-year drought in Oklahoma ended the morning after I moved in. Stuff like that... I've never claimed to make storms happen; I just invite them over to play!

I have a biggish chunk of labradorite. This is a blue-grey stone with pronounced blue, green and golden irridescences in its smoother planes. When mine is held face-up and tilted side-to-side, the effect is that of a thunderstorm clearing out of a forest. I suppose that could be my lapis manalis. I'm glad to have a name for it now. >({|:-)

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

Salvete, Sodales -

The Fasti for this upcoming Friday, 7/4/08:

Ante diem IV nonas Quintiles [N] Religiosus
[N] Nefastus (comitia: no; courts: no);
the Nonas Quintiles themselves will be on 7/7/08.
Religiosus (vitiosus): Like the dies atri, but less bad:
    - Avoid making journeys, starting new projects, doing anything risky.
    - No private religious rites may be performed, subject to the same comment as for dies atri.
    - And that comment was: Normal work would still be performed on dies atri, and as part of performing any work one performs rites for the patron deities, geni locii, and other appropriate deities. Likewise, the daily routine is also performed before the lararium.
    - New fire should not be struck.

From the SVR Calendar:
    - Ara Pacis is dedicated by Augustus, 13 BCE.
    - "Garland Your elegant coiffure with Actium’s laurel, Pax; be present and soften the whole world with Your gentleness. Let there be no enemies, no cause for triumphs. You will hand greater glory to our leaders than war can bring." (Ovid Fasti 1.711-13)

Valete, Romani.
