Salvete, Sodales -

I am now two days in arrears in terms of posting the Fasti. If I had been a bit more prescient, I would have asked for some backup. I doubt if anyone's life has come to a halt for the loss of the Calendar info on these two days, but it's still dereliction of duty on my part. I apologize.

You'll find the missing and upcoming Fasti in the post which follows.

Ut valeatis.

Salve, miser Iohanne!

Vae, there's no need to publicly flog yourself; that's what the woodshed's for. >({|;-]

But seriously, would it work better if we tag-teamed it? If they're not up when I get on, I'd post them; if they're still not up when you get on, you'd post them? As long as we get equal pay for equal work, I wouldn't object to some such arrangement. What would work for you, amice?

In fide,

Tag, I'm It!

Tag-team is good...

Ave, Marii -

That would be fine. You've noticed these multiple-day 'blackouts'. I seem to have the worst time with weekends - my schedule becomes more fluid on the one hand but then it gets more hectic on the other.

I was chagrined with myself that I had missed announcing Meditrinalia! The Meditrinalia were the first Roman holidays I ever put on my calendar - as celebrations of new wine and old wine, they have special appeal. Foolish to auto-flog myself, but the omissions speak loudly!

So I'll lead (as a rule, still) and if I've faltered, you take the eagle and march on, as it were. Which you've already done, I see, for the 15th. Gratias ago.

Vale.

Salvete, Sodales -

Marius was good enough to post the Fasti for tomorrow - okay, today - the 17th of October.

I haven't received the Fasti email regarding Saturday, the 18th, yet - but I'll post nonetheless. After all, the SVR has all this info, and more, in the Calendar that M. Horatius Piscinus put together when the Society was first formed:

Gregorian date, Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008:
Ante Diem XV Kalendas Novembres [C]
[C] Comitialis (comitia: yes; courts: yes)

- Thanksgiving to Spes and Juventus.
- Death of Agrippina, 33 BCE.

And also, for Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008:
Ante Diem XIV Kalendas Novembres [NP]
[NP] Nefastus Publicus (ordinary citizens may not commit acts of physical violence, or begin lawsuits, and should try to avoid quarrels; comitia: no; courts: no)

- ARMILUSTRUM:
    - There is a dancing procession of the Salii as the ancillae are purified and stored.
    - Military arms ritually purified and stored for winter.
    - Sacrifices were made at the sound of trumpets (Fest. p. 17, 28 ff) and were offered to Mars on the Aventine at the tomb of Titus Tatius.
    (Plut. Rom. 23.3)

Ut vos omnes hoc in mundo incerto valeant!

Armilustrium

by Aldus Marius
Salve, mi Iohanne!

Ahh, Armilustrium...! My favorite day in the Roman calendar. It comes twice a year, at the beginning and end of the old Republican war-fighting season--id sunt, Aprilis and October respectively. Oddly enough, the Armilustria coincide neatly with the beginning and end of the reenactor season, at least for those of us who do not enjoy stamping around in their caligae in the snow. Hmmm!

So 19 April finds me sitting on the front porch conditioning my lorica for my first gig of the year; and on 19 October I give it another thorough going-over and arrange any needed repairs before stowing it for the winter. It's as good a way as any to spend my dies natalis: exactly the way a Legionary would, taking good care of my equipment so it can take good care of me. Oh, yes...and mainlining the Ancestor-spirits. They like to watch me work. >({|:-)

Salvete, sleepyheads!! (And Iohannes.)

The Fasti for Wednesday, 22 October:

ante diem XI Kalendas Novembres [C]

Quote of the Day (I have got to find a way to feature the SVR calendar more prominently on the site!):

"O Pales of the Highlands, O Apollo of the Shepherds, and powerful Silvanus of the Groves, and our Venus, daughter of Dione … Reward indeed our gifts that I have given." (Nemesianus, Alcon. 1-6)

Salvete, Romani viatores!

The Fasti for Friday, 24 October:

ante diem IX Kalendas Novembres [C]

This Day in History, from the SVR calendar:

* Antonius Primus and Legio VI Victrix [my Legion!] from the Rhine legions meet Vitellius in the Second Battle of Cremona, 69 CE.

Salvete, amici -

Here are the Fasti for the weekend we verge upon:

Ante Diem VIII Kalendas Novembres [C], 10/25/2008, Dies Saturnis
[C] Comitialis (comitia: yes; courts: yes)
From the SVR Calendar:

- Crispin and Crispinianus (Castor and Pollux) as patron deities of shoemakers in the Atrium Sutoium.
- Cornelius Fuscus from Illyricum joins with Antonius Primus to defeat Aulus Vitellius on the second day of the Second Battle of Cremona, leaving Vespasian unchallenged as emperor, 69 CE.

Ante Diem VII Kalendas Novembres [C], 10/26/2008, Dies Solis
[C] Comitialis (comitia: yes; courts: yes)

- "In wine there is truth, in beer happiness, in mead inspiration."

But, Sodales - whence this last proverb? Does anyone know? Hunting on the Internet, I see a reference to Horace for "in vino veritas" and to Pliny, also, and to Alcaeus the Greek for "wine, my dear boy, and truth" - but nothing that matches this full sentence.

Optime valete.

Salvete omnes!

Hmm, sounds like something L Horatius Venator Piperbarbus might say, if he hasn't yet; he's a brewer, you know, founder of NR's Sodalitas Coquorum et Cerevisiae Coctorum, and the author of a privately-printed mead-making manual.

Venii....? Do you own this statement...? Speak to us, O Great One!! >({|;-)
