Salvete Iohannes et Marii et Omnes !

Valerius Claudius Iohanes wrote:
From the Kalends of February until the day after the Quirinalia, each day is either Nefastus or Nefastus Publicus. I have to ask: Why are all these days Nefastus, one after the other? Does anyone know if there's a reason for that?

We had an excellent sitcom on the Flemish tv ( and they speak Dutch on the Flemish tv ) that ran for 3 or 4 years. One episode every year on New Year's Eve. About a small bussiness man who invites his three employees and their spouses over for the obligatory New Year's Party which invariably turns sour. LOL.
It was called :

''Nefast voor de Feestvreugde''

Pronunciation :

'voor' sounds like fore
'de' is like the
'feest' sounds like faced
'vreugde' the eu sounds like the Scandinavian ' รถ ', not like the German ' oi ' in Freude.

PS While you're at it, why don't you tell us a bit more about 'THE CUB' , Marius ? Those balloons  weren't there yesterday, now where they ?

The Cub...and Marius as of Nones Septembris of last year. (Bein' as you wanted a recent pic.) Situation explained in this post. Scattered mentions in the Fasti and Marius' Thread topics ever since.

More pics to follow; we got some excellent ones yesterday!

(The balloons were there; special kind: 10000 ; compare with  , and Yes, I designed the fancy ones myself. File date on server: 6 Apr 2007, on the occasion of the Board's 10,000th post. To use them, click "View more smilies" under the normal set.) >({|:-)

Salvete omnes!

The Fasti for Tuesday, 24 Martius:

ante diem IX Kalendas Apriles [QRCF]
FERIAE MARTI
Notes:
QRCF (Quando Rex Comitiavit Fas): These are dies feriati (religious worship takes place) but also dies profesti (working days). They are dies nefastus (N) from dawn till the Rex Sacrorum appears in the Comitium and performs the purifying rites. From then on they are dies fastus (F) and the Comitia may be adjourned.
(Or, presumably, called into session.)

Our SVR calendar seconds the motion:

* Quando Rex Comitiavit Fas: The Comitia Curiata meets under the presidency of the Rex Sacrorum to hear wills proclaimed in the atrium Sutorius, or Hall of Shoemakers.
* Last day of the Feriae Marti
* Dies Sanguis (of the dance and castration of Galli around the Pine of Attis). Go, incite others if You must, Cybele, just go, and keep far away from me and my house! (Catullus 63.91)

Salvete, amici Romani!

The Fasti for Monday, 30 Martius:

ante diem III Kalendas Apriles [C]

* Augustus dedicated statues to Salus, Goddess of public safety and welfare, to Pax, and to Concordia in the restoration of each of their temples, 10 BCE.

And for Tuesday the 31st:

Pridie Kalendas Apriles [C]
Notes:
The last day of each month is sacred to Hekate.

* The festival of Luna held on the Aventine (per Ovid) and the Palatine (per Varro), where Her temples were illuminated throughout the night and She was called Noctiluca. "Therefore adoring You as though You were nurturing Venus Herself, whether You are female, or whether You are male, even so, Noctiluca, Illuminating the Night, You are a nurturing Moon." (Laevius, FPR fr. 26)

And that, amici, wraps up our daily presentation of the Fasti. We've been posting them for a little over a year. That won't be the end of this thread, however; I'm leaving it open for "moveable feasts", the day(s) for which change from year to year; for general calendar discussion; and for our personal reflections on, and experiences celebrating, the days of the Roman Year.

If anyone still wishes to follow along with the daily postings, you can subscribe to the [fasti] Tahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fasti/ . And of course our own Roman Calendar is always available on the Web site: http://www.societasviaromana.net/Colleg ... /index.php , and then click the month you'd like to see.

Maximas gratias vobis ago for coming along with Iohannes and me for the ride! >({|:-)
