I don´t seem to find how to submit an avatar.

Salve,
it easy, just go to your profile and there you can choose to
-upload an av from your computer
-choose one from the gallery (NOTE: there are two categories:general and military)
-link to an off-site avatar

Here's how to do it :
1) Click on "profile" on top of your screen
2) Scroll down to the bottom of the page
3) Enter the url or browse to the location on your hard disk where your image is stored. If necessary, resize it with a tool like Photoshop.
4) Submit it.

You probably have a specific avatar that you want to use, but if not, and if you are looking for just the right one, go to http://www.vroma.org and browse the image archive. Then all you'll have to do is resize whatever you want, I suppose, although I, too, have had a mite of avatar trouble!
Nevertheless, I'll be trying again. The images at vroma are available for use. Just read the use policy.
