The Theoi Project

Salvete

Some of you might know of this site, that this site was one of the best online resource available on the net concerning Greek mythology.
Unfortunatly, the site has been shut down. Google decided to ban its ads on this site since december the 1st and two days earlier the owner received a e-mail of the chairman of a Greek government committee on cultural affairs stating that the site was "heavily contaminated" with material of an extremely "unpleasant" nature. You should try to "cleanse" it. Appearently Greece has been campaigning against cultural sites within Greece and has extended its campaign to other countries.
I wonder how long it will take for this commite to turn its eye on us? I thought that doing stuff like that was a violation against human rights?
If Greece wants to shut us down, how can we prevent it?

Trespassers Will...

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Dec 05, 2006 4:59 am

Salve, mi Aureli...

Our server's in the southwestern United States. Other countries can howl all they want, we're not going anywhere unless it can be shown that we are violating the laws of the country where our data is physically located.

I am curious to know more details about the Theoi situation. What was the URL...? Was the site based in Greece? Did it come under Greek jurisdiction some other way? Was the objectionable material supposedly part of the site content itself...or was the site sabotaged by adware/spyware/other no-good-ness that may have been reaching its viewers through those banner ads?

Come to think of it, was the sender of the letter actually a government official, or was he just posing as one? Most people in positions like that are hardly going to take the time to harass one lowly Webmaster. (And if they try it on Mari, well, "unpleasant nature" won't half cover it...ask the Ukranians.)

And I hadn't heard of an overall Greek campaign against cultural anything. I know they want the stuff in the British Museum repatriated; and I think they were getting their chitons in a knot over how Classical Greece is depicted in various media...I'm pretty vague on that one, but is this situation maybe a part of that?

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

Salve Mari

The site was international because the owner is from New Zealand and lives in the netherlands. Appearently it is also possible that the site might be hacked and porn related links might have shown up in its htmlcode, maybe that was the reason why it was banned. But it is back online again. The email the owner received came from a Prof. George Maroulis. I don't know who he is, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the power to shut down international websites.
It makes you wonder what these other cultural sites are that were closed down? Where they websites or actual physical locations?

I've been reading about Hellenism in modern Greece every now and again. It's a known fact that the Greek government, under pressure from the Orthodox Church, until recently banned the worship of the Olympians. I'm fairly sure it was recently lifted to allow Greece to conform to basic human rights measures.

There are a couple of groups in Greece itself who seem to have been duking it out with Greek authorities for a number of years now.

And one group established in the UK seems to have a rather succinct mission statement you might want to check out.

This is a quote taken from a wikipedia article on the whole matter:

In 2006 an Athens court ordered the worship of the old Greek gods to be unbanned. Father Eustathios Kollas, head of the community of Greek priests, said: "They are a handful of miserable resuscitators of a degenerate dead religion who wish to return to the monstrous dark delusions of the past." The followers of Ancient Greek religion now prepares to push for full recognition.

It's unfortunate to see this sort of thing happening, but it appears to be rectifying itself over time. I can't see it happening anywhere in the States or in Western Europe though, least of all to this site. I think we're pretty safe.[/i]

Ah, that's what that was. Gratias, mi Flavi; the Marian memory is refreshed.

We survived Pateticus, a truly disgusting individual who advocated making pedophilia a religion. We survived being associated with NR when the Feds were looking up their tailpipes for kiddie porn some years back. (They didn't find anything.) I think we'll be all right.
