Ludi Romani - Gladiators

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Thu Sep 09, 2004 1:48 pm

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

For the second time in the Societas Via Romana, we proudly present:

!!!!!!!!!! Gladiator Combat !!!!!!!!!!

Every participant must submit three gladiators to take part in the combats. Each gladiator must have a unique name. Participants must also choose what type their gladiator will be, chosen from this list:

1. Dimachaerus: he fights with two swords.
2. Eques: he fights on horseback against an other Eques; armed with and sword and small shield.
3. Hoplomachus: he fights with a spear and a semi-round shield, also holds a sword to use if necessary.
4. Murmillo: he fights with a long sword (spatha) and a round or rectangular shield; wears a helmet with a fish on top.
5. Retiarius: he fights with a net and trident, has a dagger to use if necessary; wears only light protection.
6. Secutor: he fights with a sword, wears a large round or rectangular shield and a plumed helmet.
7. Thraex: he fights with a small round shield and a scimitar/sabre.

Note: in these Ludi also female gladiators are allowed. In the future a special female gladiator type will be developed, but until then they can fight as one of the standard gladiator types. They will fight male gladiators, but can be distinguished by their female names. Note that the maximum gladiators you can submit remains at three: males, females, or mixed.

Participants can choose three gladiators of the same type, or three different types, or two of the same type, etc.

In choosing the types of your gladiators, the following should be taken into account:
• Each gladiator type has its own specific ‘moves’ (see further).
• Each gladiator type has different hit points (see further).

Like in the Ludi Circenses, each gladiator also has four features, and eight points should be divided among them by the participant (please not that ‘force’ already has a certain value according to the weapons of the gladiator type – see further). The four features are: ‘force’, ‘speed’, ‘dexterity’ and ‘tactics’. Please note that the hit points and features of some of the gladiator types have changed because they were too strong or too weak.

The combat will be as follows: Gladiators are drawn by lots to form fighting pairs, taking into account that certain gladiator types can only fight some specific other types (see further). If no opponent is available, a random fighter will be created. Then the dice is thrown to determine which fighter begins the fight.

And then the actual combat starts. At every turn (one move) the dice is thrown and the appropriate action (see further) is executed. Thus six actions are possible for each gladiator type. Then hit points are extracted, if appropriate. And then the turn goes to the opponent. The gladiator who first loses all his hit points, loses the combat.

These are the gladiator types who are limited in their possible opponent types (otherwise almost all combinations are possible):
1. Eques: only against Eques
2. Retiarius: never against Retiarius
3. Thraex: never against Retiarius

And here are the gladiator types, with their hit points, their standard ‘force’ points, and their six moves, plus the amount of ‘force’ (F), ‘speed’ (S), ‘dexterity’ (D) and ‘tactics’ (T) needed for each move.

1. Dimachaerus: 30 hit points -- force: 4 (2 gladii)
1: attack with one sword to breast (5 hit points damage to opponent) F3
2: defend with two swords against coming attack (-5 hit points damage at next turn) T3 D3
3: hold off opponent with one sword whilst attacking with the other (10 hit points damage to opponent) D4 F2 T2
4: kick opponent to the ground (turn stays with gladiator, can perform other action) F5 S3
5: attack opponent sword arm (5 hit points damage to opponent - opponent loses 1 force in rest of combat) F2 T4
6: use two swords to chop off opponent head (immediate death if not defended) F5 S4 D5

2. Eques: 25 hit points -- force: 2 (gladius)
1: attack with sword to breast (5 hit points damage to opponent) F3
2: hit opponent with shield (opponent dizzy so gladiator moves again) F3 S2 T4
3: defend with shield and sword against next move (-5 hit points damage next turn) D3 T3
4: kick opponent off his horse (turn stays with gladiator, can perform other action) F5 S3
5: attack opponent sword arm (5 hit points damage to opponent - opponent loses 1 force in rest of combat) F2 T4
6: jump off horse and kill opponent horse (10 hit points damage to opponent) S2 F3 T2

4: kick opponent to the ground (turn stays with gladiator, can perform other action) F5 S3
5: defend with shield and attack with sword (10 hit points damage to opponent) F2 D3 T4
6: legionary’s attack with fast moving sword (15 hit points damage to opponent) F4 S5 T3

2: complete defence (no hit points lost in next turn) D3 T2
3: throw shield (opponent dizzy so move again) F3 D4
4: kick opponent to the ground (turn stays with gladiator, can perform other action) F4 S3
5: Thracian “flashing sword” attack (15 hit points damage to opponent) S4 D4
6: cut opponent’s throat (immediate death if not defended) S4 D5 T3

AFTER THE FIGHT

The gladiators who won their fight, will be awarded a prize. According to the hit points they have left, the prize will be more valuable. In the next fight these gladiators start again in their original ‘configuration’, of course with their possible prize added. I will send messages to all participants with all necessary information. The most valuable prize this time, for those with most hit points left and for the winner of the hoplomachus-combat (see earlier), is the creation of a unique gladiator type. Lanistae may develop their own gladiator type, which only they can use. Of course they should send me the type and stats before the Ludi commence, so their type can be tested and adapted if necessary. Curio has already sent me such a gladiator type (but he can not yet participate with it), and you can see it here (scroll down to the last message).

The gladiators who lost their fight, can be replaced by their lanista with another gladiator, or the lanista may also choose to keep them and give them another chance.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE?
Send me a pm or an email (pudionmus@yahoo.com) with the following information:
• Your SVR-name
• Your three gladiators, with their name, type and the points you divided among the features ‘force’, ‘speed’, ‘dexterity’ and ‘tactics’.

Those who participated in the previous gladiator combat, don't need to subscribe again. I will send them all a pm.

FOR NEW PARTICIPANTS: PLEASE SEND IN YOUR GLADIATORS BEFORE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 !!

Enjoy the Ludi!!

VENATIO

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Mon Sep 13, 2004 11:22 am

Welcome again in the Colosseum!

This will be the program:
Today we will present you a beautiful Venatio, with some great and suprising animals that will be hunted.
Tomorrow we have the Hoplomachus-contest, where the four remaining hoplomachi from the previous combat will fight each other to the death!
And we finish with the ordinary gladiator combats on September 15.

People are entering the Colosseum - but they can't see a thing! Around the fighting area we find a large black curtain, hiding everything behind it. The spectators are exited, and curious! They want to know why the sand of the arena is not visible - could it be that a magnificent stage has been built for the Venatio? Tiberius Draco, young and curious als he is, runs around the Colosseum to find a small gap to look through. Atticus, drinking his coffee, wonders if this back curtain has something to do with the meaning of life and afterlife. Curio tries to use his quarterstaff to create en opening in the curtain, and Mencius has fallen asleep after studying too much...

But he is suddenly awoken brutally by the signal of many trumpets! A loud noise fills the arena and slowly the curtain goes down. At first the crowd is very silent, but when the first elements of the scenery become visible, they get wilder and wilder. An unbelievably beautiful scenery comes out of the dark. Trees and bushes of various origin and nature are placed on the sand. Piscinus immediately identifies some of the plants, and he discovers that there are three areas: the woods of Gaul, the Arabian desert and between them an African savannah. And look, there are already some animals visible! Some camels in the desert, wolves in the woods, and lions in the savannah!

Then the trumpets call for silence, and the speaker rises from his seat to address the crowd. "Welcome to the Colosseum! We have a nicely filled program for this year's Ludi Romani! Besides the ordinary combat, we have a hoplomachus-contest and today this Venatio! You can see our heavily decorated arena below, and I am proud to tell that it is filled with 100 animals of various kinds, coming from all over the Roman world and beyond! And now I ask your attention for our three bestiarii for tonight! They ave been trained the whole week and are now skilled hunters, fighting with their own weapons, but also with a bow and javelins. They will be assisted by three experienced bestiarii, who will protect them and finish off the heavily wounded animals. And on a sidenote, ignore the yelling and protesting on the highest tribune on the left - those Pax Viridis-environmentalists are really becoming a plague."

"Let me now present you the three bestiarii:
On the right, coming down from the sky, the dimachaerus Sharath, sponsored by Marcus Scribonius Curio Brittannicus. He carries his two swords on his back, has a bow over his shoulder and three javelins in his hand. In his last fight, he defeated the hoplomachus Cicatrix - see how he comes along with animals!
On the left, also coming down from the sky, the dimachaerus Gavius Pontius, sponsored by Marcus Horatius Moravius Piscinus. He has his two swords in his hand and is showing his skills with some difficult moves. His assistent carries his bow, arrows and javelins. He won his last fight from Cyclops, the dimachaerus.
And in the center, coming up out of the ground, the hoplomachus Argos, sponsored by Gnaeus Dionysius Draco. Heavily armed with sword and shield, he stands quiet and seems to be concentrating on this Venatio. his assistent carries his hunting weapons."

A final blow on the trumpets, and the Venatio has begun! Argos lays down his armour and word, and takes the bow, Sharath also takes hiw bow, but Gavius Pontius keeps his swords - with his skills he is certainly able to kill some animals with those swords!

Sharath is in the woods section, and he quickly spots the two wolves. He takes his first javelin, and with a mighty throw he pins the first wolf to a tree! But the second wolf notices the danger and runs towards him. He quickly takes his bow and shoots some arrows towards the running animal. Wounded with three arrows the wolf still manages to reach Sharath, but he is quick enough to draw his two swords from his back and kill the wolf after a short fight. Only some minor scratches for Sharath! He takes his bow again, and walks on through the woods. Hiding behind a tree he sees some deer eating from the bushes. From his hideout he kills the male, and the three females start running around. Sharath goes after them, and the crowd starts cheering! While running, he fires his arrows, and one by one the three deer fall down on the ground. The crowd enjoys while Sharath keeps running around, killing more and more animals, even a wild boar!

Argos is in the savannah section and sees some antilopes near the water. With his three javelins in his hand he creeps towards them. Then he stands up and quickly throws the three javelins at three different animals. Two fall down immediately, and tha third one starts running, the javelin in its side. Argos takes his bow and starts following the running antilope. But suddenly a lion crosses his path - and his assistent is still some meters behind with his weapons. So with only his bow at hand, he tries to kill the lion with it. But a wounded lion is even more dangerous - and the lion attacks! Argos is thrown to the ground and the lion jumps upon him. Fortunately his assistent reaches the fallen gladiator, and this confuses the lion. Argos can take his sword and shield, and attacks the lion. Defending him with his sword, he is able to wound the lion in a deadly way. With a deep fleshwound Argos leaves the arena, where a doctor tells him the wound will heal quickly, and he will only have a scar afterwards.

Gavius Pontius is in the desert section carrying his two swords when an angry camel storms towards him. He has violated the wild camel's territory, and he will have to defend himself against the large hoofed animal. The camel tries to run him over, but Gavius Pontius jumps aside and tries to hit the camel's legs - but the only thing he hits is air. The camel turns around and comes back for him. Gavius Pontius hides behind a rock to slow down the camel. This technique works, and the camel slowly walks around the rock, trying to find the gladiator. But Gavius Pontius is already besides the camel, and with his legendary "flashing-sword-attack" he wounds the camel in several places. The animal starts running away, and Gavius Pontius' assistent finishes the work with bow and arrows. Gavius Pontius sits on a rock tot ake a little rest, but unfortunately the rock belongs to a family of scorpions... The dimachaerus is warned by his assistent, and he can jump away. And even though a scorpion can be fast, they are no match for the fast swords carried by Gavius Pontius.

Another trumpet signal announces the end of the Venatio! The crowd is happy, since they saw some nice action from the bestiarii. The three gladiators wave to the people, and then disappear in the catacombs of the Colosseum, preparing for the next Ludi. I hope you all enjoyed this Venatio, and see you all back tomorrow for the hoplomachus-contest!

* Now alert and enthousiastic, Mencius would like to extend his regards to PD Mus, for organising such zappy games*

What a fine display of swordsmanship, what mastery in the art of the bow! How fortunate am I to have witnessed this... Alas, now my Classics await me for further pondering. But I am certain that I shall be back tomorrow.

Pax Viridis

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Sep 14, 2004 3:45 am

** Marius and the 200 or so Pax Viridis fighters under his command get up from their benches and leave in protest of the ugly scene. He had spoken, long ago, to the master of these Games and come away with the understanding that no Venationes would be held anywhere he might see them. An especial insult, then, was that the first beast killed would be a Wolf. **

Incised, somehow, into the stone of the bench where he'd sat:

** I'LL BE BACK. **

(Heia, Draco...Is there a template for Fighter Type: Protester??) >({|;-)

Off in a huff, wearing a most Fiendish Evil grin,

HOPLOMACHUS CONTEST

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Tue Sep 14, 2004 7:43 pm

Welcome again to the Coliseum!

Today we present a knock-out competition between the 'old' hoplomachi. And the 'knock-out' can be taken literally, for they will fight to the death. We have four hoplomachi competing in this contest, so we have two semifinals and a final.

- + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

"The first semifinal is between Jakar, sponsored by Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus and Julius Phoenix, sponsored by Tiberius Dionysius Draco. In his last fight, Jakar was victorious over the murmillo Blossius Cumaensis, while Julius Phoenix defeated Raptor. The trumpet blows, the fight begins! Jakar immediately tries his legionary's attack, but it is still too early on the day for him... still sleeping, Jakar? Julius Phoenix notices this and attacks with his sword - a hit! Jakar responds with a hit back. Julius Phoenix tries to defend himself with his spear for a coming attack, but Jakar pushes him on the ground. Julius Phoenix rolls away and gets back on his feet, also trying the legionary's attack. But he is again pushed to the ground by Jakar, who fails in taking advantage here. Julius Phoenix rises to his feet again, kicks Jakar on the ground with his shield and thrusts his spear forward! A rather nasty wound for Jakar! He tries to defend, but Julius Phoenix attacks his sword arm successfully. Finally Jakar is able to respond with a sword attack, but he immediately receives another hit back on his sword arm! The desperate Jakar, now rather heavily wounded and weakened, manages two more attack on his opponent's sword arm, but then Julius Phoenix kicks him to the ground and puts his sword on his opponent's throat. He looks up to the crowd, and they all yell "Die!", "Die!". A tragic end for Jakar, and certainly a great loss for his lanista Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus. But the victory is for Julius Phoenix and his owner Tiberius Dionysius Draco! He advances to the final!"

- + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

"The second semifinal is between Argos, sponsored by Gnaeus Dionysius Draco, and Papius Brutulus, sponsored by Marcus Horatius Moravius Piscinus. Papius Brutulus slaughtered Tiberius Africanus in his last fight, and Argos triumphed over the dimachaerus Servus Primus. A trumpet sound announces the beginning of the fight, and like a whirlwind of doom Argos rushes forward; he blocks his opponent's weapons with his spear and wounds him with his sword. But Papius Brutulus has an immediate response with an attack on his opponent's sword arm. Then Argos, still furious, tries a fast legionary's attack - though this movement is still too hard for most of the gladiators. Papius Brutulus then thrusts forward with his spear, wounding his opponent badly. Still, Argos is able to attack with his sword, and although Papius Brutulus tries to defend himself with his spear, Argos manages to wound him on the chest and on his sword arm. But Papius Brutulus recovers quickly, and with another thrust forward with his spear he ends the fight, much to the amusement of the crowd. Poor Argos... Victory for Marcus Horatius Moravius Piscinus and his hoplomachus Papius Brutulus! He will fight Julius Phoenix in the final!"

"This concludes our morning session. In the next hours the Coliseum presents the execution of 50 criminals - and they will all die in 50 different ways!! So, for those who decide to stay here, enjoy the show! And we hope to see you all back this afternoon for the great hoplomachus final!"

Welcome back to the Coliseum!

"Now we have our big final, between Julius Phoenix, sponsored by Tiberius Dionysius Draco, and Papius Brutulus, sponsored by Marcus Horatius Moravius Piscinus. After a deserved rest, the gladiators are back in the arena! One of them will not leave this place alive, the other will leave in freedom, for he will receive the wooden sword!! Let the trumpet sound!"

"The fight begins, and Julius Phoenix tries a legionary's attack. Although an experienced fighter by now, he still fails... But Papius Brutulus, in his already legendary style, thrusts forward with his spear, leaving Julius Phoenix with a bad wound. Julius Phoenix responds with an attack on his opponent's sword arm, followed by a sword attack by Papius Brutulus and again an attack on the sword arm by Julius Phoenix. Papius Brutulus tries to defend, but Julius Phoenix kicks him to the ground and thrusts his spear down. Papius Brutulus is lucky he could turn away, otherwise he would be dead - now it's just another big wound... Papius Brutulus attacks his opponent's sword arm, and the two gladiators move a little away from each other to regain their strength. They circle around each other, and after a while Papius Brutulus jumps forward and attacks with his sword. Although wounded, Julius Phoenix manages to jump up, and with a mighty blow from his sword he cuts halfway into his opponent's shoulder, leaving his sword arm useless. The spectators yell for blood, and Julius Phoenix finishes his opponent off by cutting his throat. Papius Brutulus is dead, victory for Julius Phoenix and his lanista Tiberius Dionysius Draco!!!"

The trumpets sound, and Publius Dionysius Mus comes forward for the victory ceremony. He asks for silence. "Spectators, you have all seen what this man is capable of. He has fought hard and well, and for this we will reward him! He now receives a wooden sword, as a symbol of his freedom! Julius Phoenix, you are now a free man!"

And while he hands the winner a wooden sword, the crowd cheers and yells! They have found their champion for today! Hooray for Julius Phoenix!

GLADIATOR COMBAT

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Wed Sep 15, 2004 2:39 pm

Welcome on the final day of the gladiator combat!

The Colosseum is filled with spectators, and the gladiators are ready to rumble!!

The first fight is between the dimachaerus Cyclops, sponsored by Gnaeus Dionysius Draco, and the retiarius Scipio Umbra, sponsored by Tiberius Dionysius Draco. And the fact that the two sponsors are brothers, will certainly add something to the excitement of this fight! And here they go, Scipio Umbra storms forward and kicks his opponent the ground. Cyclops is too slow to turn away, and he is left with a cut on his chest from Scipio Umbra’s dagger. Cyclops responds with an attack on his opponent’s sword arm, leaving him also with a nice scar. Scipio Umbra then runs backwards and throws his trident, but Cyclops has already stepped aside and attacks his opponent, wounding him on the chest. Weakened by his wounds, Scipio Umbra doesn’t even manage to kick his opponent on the ground! But Cyclops, still fresh, goes for another attack on the sword arm. Scipio Umbra now tries to use net and trident to weaken his opponent, but Cyclops keeps moving around, meanwhile hitting his opponent twice on the sword arm (or should we say “trident arm”?). Totally exhausted, Scipio Umbra drops his weapons. Flawless victory for Cyclops and his sponsor Gnaeus Dionysius Draco!

The second fight features the equites Lazariel, sponsored by Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus, and Sejanus, sponsored by Primus Aurelius Tergestus. The two riders enter the arena, salute the crowd and start running towards each other. Sejanus takes his sword and wounds his opponent on the chest. Lazariel jumps off his horse and awaits his enraged opponent. With a nice movement of his sword, Lazariel knocks the horse down, and Sejanus bites the dust. Sejanus gets up and tries to kick his opponent to the ground, but Lazariel used the cloud of dust to get back on his horse, and Sejanus only hits air. Lazariel storms towards his opponent, but Sejanus uses the same technique as his opponent earlier, and now it’s Lazariels time to bite the dust! Both gladiators are now on foot, and an enraged Sejanus now wounds his opponent’s chest again. They back off a while, trying to regain their breath, and Lazariel recovers the quickest. He attacks his opponent’s sword arm, but Sejanus responds with the same attack. This seems to have cost Lazariel his last bit of energy, and Sejanus finishes the fight by knocking his opponent’s sword from his hands. Victory for Sejanus and his sponsor, Primus Aurelius Tergestus!

In our third fight we have the dimachaerus Hanipulus Malachus, sponsored by Tiberius Dionysius Draco, against a dimachaerus ‘from the house’, Audax. They enter the arena and walk cautiously to each other. Hanipulus Malachus then kicks his opponent to the ground. Audax rolls over and with a swing of his leg he also kicks his opponent to the ground. Hanipulus Malachus attacks towards his opponent’s chest, but Audax defends himself with his two swords. Hanipulus Malachus then tries to defend, but once more he bites the dust. Audax takes advantage of this situation and wounds his opponent’s sword arm. Hanipulus Malachus then desperately tries to chop off his enemy’s head, but luckily Audax saw that one coming. With one sword he holds back his enemy, using the other sword to wound him. Hanipulus Malachus, now badly wounded, tries again and again to knock down his opponent, but instead he receives two more bleeding wounds on his chest… Audax now decides to finish the fight, and while holding off his enemy’s weapons with one sword, he pushes his other sword through his opponent’s leg. A sad day for Tiberius Dionysius Draco and his gladiators, with a second defeat today. Luckily he won the hoplomachus-contest yesterday! But victory in this match for Audax! This means a round of free drinks tonight outside the Colosseum!

We find Aelius Maximus and Lucius Verus, both equites, in our fourth fight. Both sponsored by Primus Aurelius Tergestus, so he is certain to have a winner in this match! The equites enter the arena, and ride around to salute the crowd. Then suddenly Lucius Verus rides towards his surprised opponent and wounds him on the chest. Aelius Maximus rides away and finds an immediate response: he leaps forward, and hanging on the side of his horse he kills his opponent’s horse! Lucius Verus gets up from the sand and keeps his defense, while Aelius Maximus, still on his horse, tries to hit him with his shield. Finally Lucius Verus loosens his defense, and he gets knocked down by his opponent’s shield. Aelius Maximus uses his shield as an assault weapon, knocking it down on his opponent. But after a few hits, Lucius Verus manages to get out and with a special swing of his sword he makes Aelius Maximus hit the sand. Both gladiators are now on foot, and an enraged Aelius Maximus gives his opponent two nice marks on the chest. Although heavily bleeding, Lucius Verus kicks his opponent to the ground, be he cannot take advantage of it. And with a deep flesh wound on his opponent’s chest, Aelius Maximus finishes the fight in his advantage. Victory for Aelius Maximus, and possibly a double feeling of happiness and sadness for his sponsor Primus Aurelius Tergestus…

The fifth and final fight for these Ludi will be between the murmillo Raptor, sponsored by Gnaeus Dionysius Draco, and the new retiarius Poppaedius Silo, sponsored by Marcus Horatius Moravius Piscinus. Both gladiators enter the arena and circle around each other. Raptor tries to hit his opponent with his shield, but at the beginning of the fight Poppaedius Silo is till fast enough to evade the attack. But maybe he was a little too fast, because he didn’t see that sword coming… a nice hit by Raptor, leaving Poppaedius Silo with a nasty wound. And it gets worse! Poppaedius Silo keeps trying to use his net to distract or knock down his opponent, but every time Raptor is faster, and he jumps over it, ducks under it, evades it… he has certainly improved his tactics! And even more, while evading the net of Poppaedius Silo, he hits his opponent twice with his long sword, at the last blow leaving Poppaedius Silo bleeding on the sand of the arena. A rather one-sided contest, and a flawless victory for Raptor and his sponsor Gnaeus Dionysius Draco!

And this concludes the gladiator combat of the Ludi Romani! In a few hours we will have the victory ceremony for today’s fights, so stay tuned!

VICTORY CEREMONY

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Wed Sep 15, 2004 11:59 pm

Welcome again, for the last time these Ludi, to the Colosseum!

We will now hand over the prizes for today’s fights!

Sejanus has won a close fight, and for his victory he receives two large amphorae of Falernian wine, one for himself and one for his sponsor! Enjoy!

Aelius Maximus, eques, receives a brand new horse from the best Italian stable. This swift horse will give him an extra point for speed.

For Audax, Cyclops and Raptor, they won all three with a flawless victory, we have the best prize: they may add one extra point to one of the four features (F, S, D, T).

All lanistae will be visited soon by our judges, giving them a round-up on their gladiators after these Ludi, and informing them of the next Ludi.

I hope you all enjoyed the gladiator combat, and see you all back on the next Ludi!
