Firefighting Methods

Postby Tiberius Dionysius Draco on Tue Dec 30, 2008 10:15 pm

Salvete Omnes,

Lately I've been reading about the Vigiles (mostly on the internet, I haven't been able to go to the library yet) and there was one thing in the wikipedia article that intrigued me.

There is even evidence that chemical firefighting methods were used by throwing a vinegar based substance called acetum into fires.

I've used vinegar in the kitchen before, in recipies and cleaning stuff. I've heard it can even be used to treat diseases (though I'm rather skeptical about that).

But putting out a fire?

Could anybody explain to me how that would've worked? I'm rather hesitant to try it out myself  .

Valete bene,
