Measuring time

Postby Tiberius Dionysius Draco on Sun Jan 19, 2003 6:41 pm

Salve,

I would like more about the methods the Romans used to measure time. They used sundials but I remember reading about waterclocks too. Could anyone tell me how they divided the day (hours, minutes, seconds?) and with what kind of apparatus.

Salve,

because nobody seems to know anything about this subject, I've decided to do some resaerch myself on the internet and came across some very good sites.

http://www.beaglesoft.com/timehistoryroman.htm
http://www.clubs.psu.edu/aegsa/rome/romec.html

The first URL gives alot of information about the history and apparatus the Romans used to measure time.
The latter is a complete Roman calendar on wich you can see what Roman day it would be today and wich god should be honored.

That is al I could find, maybe someone would like to add something to this?
