Still Around

Salve amici,

Hello all!

Sorry it's been so long since I last posted. I know there are a few of you here I used to talk to regularly but it's been some time since I was last online. Don't worry, I have a perfectly valid reason for all this.

I only recently got back from a four week romp around Western Europe. Contiki to be precise. I had a brilliant time, something I will never forget. Of course the most memorable was Rome.

A city as brilliant in its contrast (we walked by an Italian cop whoes mobile ring tone was Waltzing Matilda, which scarred the hell out of us Aussies), as it is humbling through its history. I walked through the remains of the Forum Romanorum, saw the triumphal arches of old, stood on the top row of the Colloseum and even stood within the hallowed Senate House.

I have many pics, a few of them blurred. Everyone apparently has their 'Europe' moment, when they realise they're in Europe. Mine was in the Pantheon. So beautiful.

For those of you that haven't been, set your eyes on the Eternal City. After all, all roads have to lead somewhere... ;)

Vale,

A. Flavius

Do you have a place where you can post your pictures with captions? I would like to see them. And did you get any pictures of pretty Italian girls?

Salve mi Flavi!

I am glad you had such a good trip. I see you too were bit by the Rome bug. Be warned, once you visit...you have to go back. After my first visit, I was back again in less than a year. The family and I are planning a trip there for next Thanksgiving.

You may be a little farther away, but you too shall return!

Please do post your pictures, I need my fix!

Vale!

Salve, mi Flavi!! Maior e longinquo reverentia (Some things are best admired at a distance)...but you're not supposed to be one of them! Welcome back!! >({|:-D

Ahh, Roma... I've told myself I'm going to go at least once...twice if I can get away with it. The first time I will need an entire year...seven or eight months there, and two or three to absorb the experience... No kidding. I know the visit will affect me profoundly on a deep spiritual level. I won't be able to just walk off the plane and explain that to anyone, except another Roman-in-Spirit.

When...? I don't know. My life has not leant itself to the fulfillment of dreams. Sometime in the next several years; because within the next ten years, I've got an appointment with Hadrian's Wall, built in part by my Legion, the VI Victrix. I intend to walk the entire length of it (park personnel permitting) in kit. I doubt they'll let me camp out in the milecastles, but that's OK. I've a friend or two who'd like to come with me, so I won't lack for company.

I want to see Rome (and Ostia, and the Cities of Vesuvius) before I go to the Wall. Roman Spain afters. But first things first. If I never take another overseas trip in my life, I must take those two. Have to. Like the migrating falcon who gives me my cognomen. Not so much an urge as an instinct.

On a lighter note: Would you like to help me resume the RP? <g>

Salve amice,

It's good to hear from you again Marius. I thought you'd lived up to your namesake and gone wandering at some point there. Rome was indeed the highlight of my trip. I'm pained I wasn't able to take time out to see Pompeii and Herculaneum, but it would have meant cutting time out of Rome. Rather like going for a hand when you have a shot at the heart :)

It was a proufoundly moving experience. Especially the Forum Romanorum. Walking on the saem cobbled streets and gazing on the Umbilical of Rome. Seeing the Triumphals arch of Titus, and that famous fresco of Roman soldiers carrying off the Jewish Menorah after the sack of Jerusalem. The Columns of Marcus Aurelius and Trajan. I even stood in the Senate Hall, Marius. If no one had been there I would have jumped the boundary and sat there, fines be damned.

I loved it Marius. I was in Rome, still the centre of the West after three thousand years. Words alone will never do that city, Eternal City, justice. I just wish there had been others there who shared my enthusiasm. That's the trouble with touring with Contiki.

Tell me when you're going Marius, there's much more of the Roman world to see and perhaps we can do it in good company :)

Vale,

A. Flavius
