This looks like an interesting group! I look forward to reading more of the posts.

I've recently published a novel that provides an Upstairs/ Downstairs look at household life in Pompeii. If any of you are interested, please see the companion web site at www.rebecca-east.com for more information; the novel is available at Amazon UK and other major online booksellers.

Author: Rebecca East Title: A. D. 62: Pompeii

Heia!

Perhaps we can use this thread to welcome *all* new members, and to give them a place to introduce themselves...?

** Marius was about to create a new topic for intros, but then he saw this one, already aptly-titled **

Chaire Messalina,

a big welcome from me too! I aswell do hope that we'll see you a lot in these parts. Forsure this 'Metus Belgicus' is not something to laugh with. There were times when they just bardged in the tent of a centurion and killed them  [They say only the collegium Graecum knows safety ] But the greatest fear -I think is that of 'Hubris', and fankly though understandable, it's the only "felon" we cyberromans commit 8)

According to my preaceptor, Draco, I'd better introduce myself! I'm Helena Eleutheria, a new member with a great deal of interest in SVR. I hope to learn a good deal and contribute where I can. I'm currently a grad student as many of you probably are. My task at hand - writing a thesis on Roman Republican political friendship, focusing on Cicero and L. Munatius Plancus.

Having begun about a year ago I'm alternately enthusiastic and and sick to death of the subject!! If anyone is a particular specialist at friendship or Cicero, please wave a flag.

I look forward to a fine experience with you all.

Chaîre Helena,

welcome on my behalf. Last year I wrote a thesis on the suggestend collaboration of Crassus Dives and Caesar to the Coniurationis Catilinae. I found them to be not guilty -on the contrary, they helped tot stop him! Evereything was set up by Cicero, so I gather he hasn't many friends. Also Lupus and I have this theory that Atticus is either an imaginary friend or he's stalked by Cicero. Possibly the second option is valid, seeïng that Atticus really lived. How good of friends are boni actually? Are Junior and Powell friends? I doubt it. But enough speculation, what are your findings so far? I am higly interested, for I completed a year in the library working on Cicero aswell.

chairétismous,

Héllenos

M.G.: Maybe our shared praeceptor could do the moving tread thingu again. To the Collegium Historicum I suppose.

Salvete!

Indeed it makes my ego swell significantly that the people I've taken under my wings are talking - to each other! j/k about the ego stuff though.

Good to see you post Helena! Welcome to the forum! :)

Anyway, I'm not going to move all topics here so I'll give my quick comments on Cicero here.

In popular history I get the impression Cicero is portrayed in a positive way, as he also is in philosophical overviews. Like Mus sometimes remarked, you can't argue about the man's merits and intelligence. However, he is self-contradictory and, although he didn't actively contribute to destroy the Republic as some others did, neither did he save it, as he claims to have (I doubt that he could have saved it).

In Collegium Historicum we staged a fictional trial of Cicero about 1,5 year ago. You might want to check it out. I have a friend who also wrote her thesis on Cicero (the Catalinarian affair) and she liked it. Perhaps you might like it too. If there's anything you disagree with, of course, just let us know here ;).

Valete optime,
Draco

It is very good to see you here. Welcome to SVR.

By friendships are you referring to an Amicitia? Did Cicero have one, I wonder? He may have been in that of Pompeius Magnus, and one would assume I suppose that a former consul would have his own. But cicero always seemed to be more of a hanger on to other political parties than to actually leading one of his own. I'd like to hear more from you on this.
