Need a cognomen. Whaddya think? Something interesting. I saw a cool name, but I forgot it. Oh, and it doesn't have to be traditional. I used to go with Maxumus, but 1 everybody thought I should have spellt it Maximux and 2 I can't have it hear. Any suggestions?

What? You actually want me to describe myself? Forget it.

Salve,

As far as I know Maxumus is older than classical Latin, but evolved into (and means the same thing as) Maximus, so why not go with that ?

You can find a few other examples here:

I have a simple method:

What one word best describes you? (You don't have to tell us.)

Find its Latin equivalent, and there's your Cognomen.

Once a Nomenclator...

Salvete,

We usually don't accept cognomina such as "maximus", "magnus", "invictus" and the like because they were actually agnomina.

As for cognomina, I'll go with what Marius says ;).

Salve Draco,

Presumably you do accept agnomina though? After all, "Britannicus" is an agnomen, and I ain't giving up Britannicus.

Bene vale,
Marcus Scribonius Curio *Britannicus*.

Another ploy by the Dionysian Empire to keep the others "small" ?

We will oppose you ! We wil not go gentle into that good night !

Hmm, Marius Minimus...Marius Paullus Minimus...Marius Minimus Paullus...? Marius Parvullus? Parvullus Minimus...?

...If I were Censor, I'd accept any of these names (with proper Praenomen) in a minute. >({|;-)

I think it's the concept of self-agrandizement-through-name-selection that our Regula are (is, mi Draco?) trying to discourage. After the Gladiator movie, everybody entering a certain Internet micronation wanted to be "Maximus". Or Magnus. Wouldn't've been surprised if I'd seen a Curius Odus, a Varius Flavus, maybe even a Splendiferus or two!

In amicitia (and not really planning to change his name--he fought the OP too hard for the one he has!),

What about Scerius, or maybe Scerio? Do they allow play on words in Latin?

Here is a link to some examples of the Cognomen that might be of help:

Odd, that site has many cognomina highlighted with references to people, but they forgot Publius Ovidius Naso.

Oh, and I think I've decided to go with Scerius, and maybe when I get powerful enough I'll add the agnomen Maxumus.

Close, no cigar...

It also has various nomina--such as mine!--listed as cognomina. Buzzzzz......! (like in a contest show when someone muffs the answer)

I liked the links to biographies, though.
