Ave amici,

I was browsing through some of the site links and eventually came to this song. I read and thought of you Marius, enjoy :)

---

ROMAN LEGIONAIRE To the tune of "British Grenadier" (Spoofed by Quintus)

Some talk of Alexander and some of Hercules
Of Marius and Caesar and such great men as these
But of all the world's great heros there's none that can compare
Sing tow-row-row-row-row
To the Roman Legionaire

Whenever we're commanded to storm the palisade
We form a grand testudo, advancing in its shade
We crash right through the gateway and kill everyone who's there
Sing tow-row-row-row-row
To the Roman Legionaire

The Tribunes all are children, the Legates all are drunks
Centurions are sadists, and the Optios are punks
But luckily for Rome, the ranks are filled with men most fair
Sing tow-row-row-row-row
To the Roman Legionaire

There's some prefer the Pilum, and some the Gladius
There's some who use the Scutum to smash 'em in the puss
But no matter what your preference, you'll find true friendship here
Sing tow-row-row-row-row
To the Roman Legionaire

So chug-a-lug that fish sauce, and slather on the oil
Strap on that dreadfull armor and feel your body boil
When you've marched ten thousand paces, you're only halfway there
Sing tow-row-row-row-row
To the Roman Legionaire

Thank'ee's!

Aule Flavi, Aule Flavi--!

I read your message over an hour ago and I am *still* LMRAO!!! (and scaring the pup) >({|:-D

Thank you, amice; you've made my day. You'll have to teach me the tune; then we can chant it as we hoof it down the Via Appia, ne'?

*exits, still shaking his head and chuckling*

That is quite frankly the best Roman army chant I've seen. Ever.

Bravo! Got any more? ;)

Salve amice!

It's grown to 14.5K since I wrote that; more ditties and some poetry. I think I'll post it here in segments for all to enjoy, how's that? >({|:-)

Ave Praefectue Castrorum,
Have I missed where your Roman Jodie calls got posted? Quite possible since I just found out the SVR site had moved.
Also, that "Roman Wall Blues" poem fits the classic Jodie call perfectly.

In honorable nuisancetude

Salve, mi Erici!

*checks date of promise*

*checks other dates in other places*

Wow...I knew I was a scatterbrain, but this was "failure-to-get-back-to" on an epic scale. That's the week I posted the ditties all over the Good Ship Luperca. Not too long afters, I dropped the whole file off at the Aelian domus. But I never made it back here??

O....kay!! Time to test out a new Board feature: Attaching Files!

*starts tinkering*

Hmm, hmm, hmmm....what have we here?

AH! There it is: the "Upload Attachment" tab right underneath the Compose Message window.

*clicks*

...Standard file-upload procedure: Browse, select, add...

...Got it. Wrote a comment too. Filename and comment show up in a box called "Posted Attachments" under the compose-message text. Message Preview lets you preview the attachment too.

Here goes nothin'...! >({|8-)

*hits 'Submit'*

I see you got my Roman Wall Blues in there. Bene!
A word on that one...

It fits the beat, rhythym of hte classic Jodie call
(marching cadence "song" [that is not really a song]:

Sgt.: Jodie was there when you left.
Troops: You're right.
Sgt.: Her baby was born when you left.
Troops: You're right.
Sgt.: That's the reason you left.
Troops: You're right.
Sgt.: Sound off!
Troops: One. Two!
Sgt.: Sound off!
Troops: Three. Four!
Sgt.: Cadence count!
Troops: One, two, three, four. One, two. THREE, FOUR!

Then the sergeant, leader, starts on the next verse in the same manner. Additional verses can be made up by the leader as he goes along. There might be more verses to this Jodie than to the Caledonians' "Ball of Ballymuir".

I do the "Roman Wall Blues" in a similar manner.

Leader starts off and troop join in (this couplet will be the course troops reply with):
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
The rain comes pattering out of the sky,
I'm a Wall soldier, I don't know why.

Troops:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
The mist creeps over the hard grey stone,
My girl's in Tungria; I sleep alone.

Troops:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
Aulus goes hanging around her place,
I don't like his manners, I don't like his face.

Troops:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
Piso's a Christian, he worships a fish;
There'd be no kissing if he had his wish.

Troops:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
She gave me a ring but I diced it away;
I want my girl and I want my pay.

Troops:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.

Leader:
When I'm a veteran with only one eye
I shall do nothing but look at the sky.

Troops, or All:
Over the heather the wet wind blows,
I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose.
