Salvete,

I heard some contrary stories on Labienus. Who actually was he?

Valete,

Barbatus

Salve Locate,

From the top of my head: Labienus was one of Caesar's most trusted lieutenants and an experienced soldier. Some say Caesar owes many of his victories to him. Many classicists and scholars agree that Labienus also wrote the last parts of De Bello Gallico (although I may be confusing him with someone else of his staff here). I believe he later defected to the side of Pompeius and died on the battlefield in Hispania. But as I said this is just what I can recall, I'm not sure if I'm correct.

Vale bene,
Draco

Well, what I heard on Labienus is a bit what is told here. Some say Labienus was the genius that actually won the war on the Gauls and then ran over out of frustration, other say that Labienus was just a slave of Caesar and was kicked out.
What is the truth?
