Jihad goes Greece ?

Postby Quintus Pomponius Atticus on Mon Oct 28, 2002 7:32 pm

Salve Sokare,

As the Greeks never had a dogmatic religion to spill their blood for in Antiquity, I think it is highly unlikely that they ever engaged in "holy wars" of any kind. At least I have never heard anything about such a war.

Perhaps your source just used the expression "holy war" in a hyperbolic way. I can imagine the Greeks -as, funnily, any warring nation does - believed that the gods were on their side, rendering all their conflicts into "holy wars"... Anyway, that sort of military rhetoric is highly popular throughout history, and even today...

God bless SVR

Salve Attice
I think i read it in Mary Macgregors book about Hellas. It was a war to save Delfi from the enemy and macedonia had something to do with as with an another nation whose name i forgot.
Mayby you know something about this?

Salve Philippos

Yes, you certainly may. Our Regula Fundamentalis gives special place to the Religio Romana in the conduct of our societas, but that same charter also demands of all sodales that proper respect be given to all faiths. The Collegium Religionis likewise is meant for discussions of all faiths, and all faiths are to be given equal respect in its disciussions, althoughs its members have generally and primarily focused on the Religio Romana. Discussion of Hellene or Hellenistic faiths may be made in either the Collegium Religionis or in the Collegium Graecum, as it is meant to cover all aspects of Greek culture.

Yes there were two Holy Wars, fought over control of the sanctuary of Delphi. Details I would have to look up. the first, if I recall, had to do with Corinth charging exorbitant admittance to the sanctuary, and Corinth losing the war, Delphi became a panhellenic sanctuary. The second Holy War was where Corinth tried to regain control of Delphi. I think Philip of Macedonia was involved in both wars, but you know I am not too good with my Greek history.

Salvete,

a late reply, but better late than never I guess...

As far as I know, there were three Holy Wars, the first one in 600-590 BC, when Phokis claimed ownership of the oracle at Delphi and was defeated by a coalition of Athens and Sikyon.

My source never mentions the second Holy War but goes straight to the Third one, in 356-346. It is again Phokis that overtakes Delphi (after it had been accused of blasphemy) with the support of both Athens and Sparta and it is Philippus from Macedonia who uses the unrest in Greece as his cue to invade it (and ultimately ending the war of course...)

Piscine, I've found nothing about the involvement of Corinth, perhaps you mistook it for Phokis, or else the Corinthians where involved in the Second Holy War, the one my source never mentions...

Does anyone else have a conclusive answer ?

Another question: where was Phokis? This is the first time I hear of this polis.

Draco,
if i'm not mistaken, Phokis lies somewhere southwest of central Greece.

Salve Draco,

Phokis is the prefecture in which Delphi lies. Just click the following link

http://www.culture.gr/maps/hellas.html

and then select the area directly north-east of "Patras" on the map.
