Evocati

Postby Marcus Pomponius Lupus on Sat Oct 09, 2004 2:14 pm

Salvete,

While reading Tacitus, we came across a class of soldiers, known as the "Evocati", soldiers whose military service is fulfilled and who can retire, but are asked to stay anyway, because of their experience.

Does anyone know something more about them, a famous example perhaps ?

Salve Lupe

Caesar mentions one by name, a centurian who was killed while leading an assault. I don't recall now which campaign that was, but if I find it again I will send it along.

Lucius Vorenus ?

Serious now. I looked it up in a general book on the Roman army but could not find any more information or examples.

I did find 1 (!) article in a Roman army bibliography on the net :

Birley, Eric, "Evocatus Aug. A review," ZPE 43 (1981) 25-29.

And this is the tombstone inscription of a real EVOCATUS Marcus Caesius Verus ( 1 century AD ) .
I searched on the net with terms as Evocati in the roman army ,Veterans in the Roman army, Evocati in dass Roemische Heer, les evocati dans l armee romain etc.
I found a lot of references.
Greetings from Holland Don Turan.

Salvete amici...

My concept of the evocati has been that they were more or less like some of today's Reservists: retired, but still subject to call-up in times of national emergency. I think I might have read a little about them in Graham Webster, The Roman Imperial Army of the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD. These "reservists" may even have met from time to time for "drill weekends" to maintain their readiness. And they were volunteers.

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

From what i know Evocati are soldiers who finished the obligatory military duty and chose or were offered to remain in the army. I envision them as something similar to the earlier Triarii...
