'Nachleben' of classical antiquity

Postby Quintus Pomponius Atticus on Sat Mar 06, 2004 3:50 pm

Salvete,

As we all know, Greece and Rome exercised a tremendous influence on Western arts. Almost everyone with a basic knowledge of art and literature, for example, knows Botticelli's "Birth of Venus", Keat's "Ode to a Grecian urn" etc.

But antiquity often also survives in somewhat lesser known works of art, and I would like to hear other socii tell about little treasures they may have found on their aesthetic 'journeys'.

I myself will start, by pointing at the fact that many of Franz Schubert's splendid art-songs are written on German poems inspired by classical themes, a few examples of which I present below.

Texts of the poems/songs, with English translation, can be found @ http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/s/schubert.html. As for the music itself, I still refer to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's legendary 3 volume edition of Schubert's Lieder on Deutsche Grammophon.

Amphiaros (T. Körner), D 166
Fragment aus dem Aeschylus (Aeschylus), D 450
Orpheus (J.G. Jacoby), D 474
An Schwager Kronos (J.W. von Goethe), D 369
Lied eines Schiffers and die Dioskuren (J. Mayrhofer), D 360
Philoktet (J. Mayrhofer), D 540
Menon (J. Mayrhofer), D 541
Ganymed (J.W. von Goethe), D 543
Gruppe as dem Tartarus (F. von Schiller), D 583
Elysium (F. von Schiller), D 584
Attys (J. Mayrhofer), D 585
Prometheus (J.W. von Goethe), D 674
Orest auf Tauris (J. Mayrhofer), D 548
And die Leier (Anakreon, trans. F.S.R. von Bruchmann), D 737
Dithyrambe (F. von Schiller), D 801
Hippolits Lied (F. von Gerstenberg), D 890

What a beautiful song-recital it would be, if any singer would perform this classically-inspired list !
