oh, well, I'll be there, if there will be a large amount of wine, that cheers me up most of the time...
na ja, actually it doesn't, I get more depressed, but I tend to be a better faker of luck when drunk :wink:

Allright, the cynic will be attending the symposium, who else is in?

Salve Tiberi

I shall be away 28-30 May, taking in the waters along the Great Swamp Eerie, and I shall also be conducting a class at that time. But I may stop in. Stoicus. A little wine, in moderation, will do well after my retreat. Any dancing girls at your symposium, or do we have to put up with another one of those drab affairs thrown by your colleague?

Salve Tiberi,

I will be there to assist the others consuming your excellent wine, but - what with it being exam time and all - I must pass up the opportunity to debate with the others - I will sit on the sidelines and listen in on this one.

Symposium!

Postby Aldus Marius on Mon May 09, 2005 12:16 am

Euge!!

About time we had another one of these! --I've missed them; we haven't seen one since the Collegiae got reorganized, and I was afraid they'd gone extinct.

I have to scrape what's left of my mind together every morning just to hop out of bed <g>, so I probably wouldn't make a very good participant. However, I shall certainly continue as a faithful reader!

In fide,

Salvete,

I'll be having exams too at that time, so I'm still considering whether I will join in or not. If I do, I'd like defend the position of the Peripathetics (Aristoteleans).

Still exams then, I'm afraid :( Here in Ghent, the exam period stretches from the end of may to the end of june.

Thinking of you guys...

Postby Aldus Marius on Sat May 14, 2005 4:28 am

Salvete amici...!

Ahh, the Time of Examined Finality. (Sounds like a good title for one of Locatus' recent threads!) I was rummaging through my book-boxes, and found a...prayer? ...poem? that, while geared to postgraduate mathematics majors, did seem to have the appropriate tenor (tenure? <g>) for this busy season in the Societas Viae Romanae.

This comes from John D. Barrow's Pi in the Sky: Counting, Thinking, and Being, put out by Oxford UP in 1992.

The Lord is my Thesis Advisor; I shall not err.
He arranges for me to be published in the Respectable Journals;
He teaches me how to use the reductio argument.
He ensures my validity;
He leads me by the classical logic, for the truth's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Existence Proofs,
I will fear no contradiction;
For He edits my work.
The Axiom of Choice and Zorn's Lemma, they comfort me.

He invites a colloquium on Classical Analysis,
For my participation, in the absence of the Constructivists;
He frequently and approvingly abstracts me in Mathematical Reviews;
My Reputation flourishes internationally.
Surely, Honors and Grants shall follow me all the days of my career.
And I shall rise in the ranks of the Department,
To Emeritus.
Amen.

Say, the SVR was founded four years ago; oughtn't some of you to have graduated by now...? >({|;-P

That's a nice one... the Time of Examined Finality...

Still thinking about a discussion that fits under this title :wink:

Symposium--What It Is

Postby Aldus Marius on Sun May 22, 2005 8:19 am

Salve, Quintus Valerius...

Every once in a while, before the Collegiae got reshuffled, the Collegium Philosophicum would put on a Symposium. Someone would select a topic (something like "Do animals have souls?"...I don't think that one's actually been done, but that kind of thing). The participants would then present their arguments (now here's the fun part) each from the standpoint of a different philosophy.

A speaker's chosen philosophy did not have to match his own personal school of thought. The idea was to see how well persons not necessarily of those schools could portray the perspectives of a Stoic, an Epicurian, a Platonist, a Peripatetic... We tried to have one representative from each school. As for how successful we were...the previous Symposia have their threads right here in this Collegium; you may enjoy their dialogues at leisure! >({|:-)

Ho hum, well ain't this a bum. Let's see what we have so far
1. Platonism
2. Peripatheticism
3. Stoicism
4. Platonism again?
5. Cynicism

Puto me in hoc tacere, but I will be there to enjoy the show.

I thought I'd start off with some small talk. What are all of you up to this summer? Any plans? Anybody travelling or going on vacations?

My work has taken me far from home since March, though I would not call it a vacation by any stretch of the word. It leaves me with little personal time, which I am gradually missing more and more. Such is life, I suppose. I hope the rest of you have more interesting things going on...

During the first week of July, I'll be visiting St. Petersburg with a group of fellow history students.

Almost immediately after that, we will spend a few days in a cabin on a forested terrain near Brussels, with a group of friends including, among others, Draco and Lupus. Less than 50 miles away, but always very cosy and relaxing (we do this every year) :)

For the weeks after that, I've no plans at all :wink:

Salvete

Currently I am conducting a class at Academia Thules on Roman ritual. Which is why I have not been very active anywhere else lately. I will be gone next week spending time with my family, and then return to class for two weeks more. Then I am taking some time away from the 'puter to read, research and write on projects for which I am already commited, and to enjoy some time alone in the woods.

September is when I hope to be travelling again, to Philadelphia to attend a Pagan Pride festival and assist some friends in performing a Roman ritual for Jupiter and Juno.

I've got no plans this summer except working my oh-so-fulfilling job, partying a fair bit and lounging around.

I'm crashing this party mostly for the drinks :P

Summer Vacation

Postby Cleopatra Aelia on Sat Jun 25, 2005 2:12 pm

Avete Amici!

I just had been away for one week at the island of Rügen in East Germany which was very nice and relaxing. Very nice and beautiful nature with steep chalk cliffs, woods and fields, perfect for bicycle and hiking tours. Also an interesting history, as there was a religious center of Slavic people who worshipped on Kap Arkona their highest god Svantevit. Unfortunately this got destroyed by the already Christian Danish who forced them to convert to Chritianity.

For mid-September I'm planing to go on a trip thru various English cities with a friend but she's still waiting for her boss to approve her vacation. If he doesn't do so soon I see chances waning that we'll get cheap flights.

Salve Cleopatra,

Rügen sounds interesting. Svantevit you say? To my ears that sounds Scandinavian more than Slavic... is it a transliteration of a Slavic (edit: I originally wrote "Saliv", lol) name then?
