What I recall of Melita is that not only did they have the first known stone constructed structures, monumental structures at that, but also the first depiction of the Tree of Life, on a stone altar carved with a four sided pedestal, and the first depiction of the Twin goddesses, and the first depiction of the Twin Goddesses and Child. It is difficult to say where exactly the megalithic culture began. Malta certain became a very early center, with other islands near Sicily likewise becoming megalithic centers. The culture then spread to Italy, and from there westward up the coasts until finally reaching as far as Scotland. Stonehenge is a late construction of this culture. You do not hear much about the dolmons, menhirs and stone circles of Italy but they do exist, concentrated mostly in Apulia, and the very largest stone circle in the world is found in the Italian Alps. Romans knew of the cite and told how only on certain days in the spring were the snows melted away to reveal the site. The culture goes back to the period of the Italian Neolitica, which if I recall correctly begins about 9000 BP and spread from Apulia to the rest of Italy, and then to Sicily and Malta, beginning about 6000 BP. There are quite a few websites on the Italian neolitica and its megalithic sites, some including the temples of Malta.
