Fast of Ceres

Salvete collegae

4 Oct IIII NONES OCT 2755 AUC Ieiunium Cereris

A reminder for today that it marks the Fast of Ceres, held in remembrance of Her mourning the loss of Proserpina.

Tomorrow there is noted "mundus patet", meaning that the mundus pit is uncovered and the gateway into the Underworld is opened. It is a time to commune with our deceased friends and ancestors. The last time in the year that the mundus is opened will be on 8 November for the Mania.

Roman custom here differs a little from the Greek, but parallels with the solemn ceremonies for Demeter held at Eleusis that were conducted about a month earlier. Also the similar Isiac ceremonies, beginning with the Inventio Osiris later this month and concluding with the Hilaria of 3 Nov.
