Avete, amici Romani!

This may interest some of you:

Dear Colleagues,

I invite you to join me in petitioning His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to authorize the creation of a Latin interface for the Vatican website at vatican.va. While the present site does contain a few Latin documents, the actual interface is available to the public in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and even Portuguese, but (incredibly) not in Latin.

It appears there is a movement on in some quarters inside the Vatican to change this situation, but the case cannot be made effectively to the skeptics without a clear demonstration of public interest and support.

Earlier this week I set up an online petition at iPetitions.com to address this question. It does not ask that Latin be used instead of the modern languages, but only that Latin be given its rightful place beside them. If you are teaching Latin, a Latin interface on this website
could be a very valuable tool for you and your students, if only to prove that Latin really does still live.

Please sign the petition at

www.ipetitions.com/petition/pro_lingua_latina

and ask your friends, colleagues and students to join you. All signatures will be hand-delivered to Vatican authorities no later than December 1, 2007.

Gratias plurimas!
