Deity Sculptures or Figures

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Sat Dec 15, 2007 3:40 am

Salvete, sodales -

Another plea for advice from my fellow sodales:

I have been trying for a while to find a sculpture or image of Saturnus, a respectable but affordable one. I've been looking mostly on-line, and I have found figurines of Aphrodite, Venus, Diana, Artemis, Hera, Apollo, Volcanus, et ceteri - but Saturnus appears to be singularly unpopular.

Since Saturnalia is practically upon us, I wondered if any others have had better luck finding, creating, comissioning images or figures of Saturn, and if so, where and how and so on. Any help would be appreciated.

Vos omnes, valete.

Before Hellinization, Saturnus, all deities, in fact, didn't have busts. I do not ever recall seeing a bust or sculpture of any kind of Saturnus. He, with numerous other gods, weren't popular sculpture items, or at least Classicists never identified any with them. I can't even recall any wall paintings of Saturnus.

I found one (original antiquity) for sale, but it reflects Punic influence and looks like it would be pricy

Here are a couple of images of statues of Saturnus

http://robjo.wordpress.com/2007/05/ (look at bottom of page. Includes discussion of commissioning a copy)

There is a nice engraving here

Hope one of these helps you.

You gave me a fright, Timave! I was certain that Saturnus had lacked sculptures. Cronus, on the other hand, was depicted somewhat in Greece. The first you rightly mentioned Punic influence, since the God is actually Baal-Saturn, i.e. Baal who was recognized by the Romans as being equivalent to Saturn. That certainly is Roman style, though. I'm not an expert, so I'll reserve my opinions on the others.

Saturnus and his aliases

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:05 am

Salvete, magistri -

Et gratias tibi, Timave, ago. Yes, I doubt the Saturn-Baal statue is within my budget! But it's a beautiful image: cape, hood, but instead of a sickle, he's holding a - discus? Is that a sheaf of grain behind and to the side? I was really surprised that Saturn was left out - my guess is that agricultural gods are not as spammy as a lot of the others.... 8^)

All I need now is a sculptor who can work (for cheap!) from a few depictions. I appreciate the links.

Quinte Valerii - was there a religious reason that Saturn was not depicted in statuary? You said,

I was certain that Saturnus had lacked sculptures.

I don't think it's a discus. Could it be a vessel?
