Hmmm....
Although something can be said about bombastic elements Homeros is nowhere nearly as bombastic as Cicero in his speeches. It depends on what parts you read of the Ilias and Odysseia, too. The style is visually beautiful and Homeros shows a good insight in the workings of a human psyche. His depiction of war in all its aspects (heroism, cruelty, darkness, despair, madness, glory) is also surprisingly modern.
The Odysseia, on the other hand, is probably more influential in this era. A masterpiece like "Ulysses" would have never been written without the Odysseia so even if you don't like Homeros you should still thank him for that
