Ludi Plebeii

Postby Gnaeus Dionysius Draco on Sun Oct 26, 2003 12:15 pm

Salvete Romani!

Everyone's attention for the one-but-last ludi circenses of the year, the ludi Plebeii. The stakes are high. Only Piscinus' Romulus might dethrone Damnator but for the factiones the battle is still open and far from over.

Anyone who wants to change his or her tactics and/or statistics, or any new players? who'd like to join us, drop me a line please! More information about this whole concept, for the newcomers, can be found on the ludi pages themselves, namely here. If you want to join us, please don't hesitate! More players are always welcome at any time.

Secondly, you can still gamble. How this works is also explained here earlier on the forum and on the ludi pages.

Although the historical ludi Plebeii started on November 4, because of practical reasons they will start on November 8 this year. You have time until November 7 to make changes or modifications or to become a competitor in the ludi.

Salvete!

The ludi are upcoming, but the processing and publishing of the results will have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday. However, I now have internet access in my student's room, which means I can update the site again. Yay!

QUARTERS

Postby Gnaeus Dionysius Draco on Mon Nov 17, 2003 5:58 pm

Salvete!

Later than expected, but there they are!

LUDI PLEBEII QUARTER FINALS

Group I (Hannibal, Indutiomarus, Romulus, Damnator)

Welcome to our first quarter final! The line-up looks promising and dangerous. Everyone knows that Romulus is the only one who can yet topple Damnator and prevent him from winning this year's championships. Hannibal, on the other hand, is keen on winning. The Greens have never achieved the first spot during this year. And finally there's Indutiomarus of Aurata who is, theoretically at least, the second-fastest racer in this final. Oh and there they go already with Romulus assuming the lead. The Purpurea fans are very pleased. It's appearent from the start that Hannibal, in spite of recent improvements, is going to get nowhere near the other three contenders, who are real speed demons. Indutiomarus approaches Damnator but is positioned on the wrong side of the walls as Damnator pushes the "Gallia Victrix" swiftly against the walls, thereby also losing his only chance at catching up with his arch-rival. Romulus is first, Damnator second and an unhappy Hannibal comes third.

Group II (PD Robur, Myrtilos, Victorinus)

Victorinus represents Praesina's only chance of getting beyond the first round now! Publius Decius Robur and his "Quadriga Ignis" are self-confidently glittering in the early winter sun. PD Robur knows he has the potential to win, and Aurata can still compete for the best factio this year. Everyone expects Robur to win these quarters. Myrtilos is a bit of an unhappy case. As the leader of Veneta he saw his factio sink away into a slough of mediocrity this year, but who knows this race may restore some of his earlier reputation as a decent racer. As the chariots start, Publius Decius Robur takes the lead without much ado, loudly cheered on by the Golden supporters who have remained in the circus. The real showdown however, is between Victorinus and Myrtilos. Victorinus is known for his aggression but Myrtilos does not prove to be an easy victim. And then in the seventh round, after much bumping, shouting and slamming Victorinus accidentally drives himself onto the spina. Myrtilos has no chance of catching up with Robur, but the few Blue fans in the circus go out of their minds. Finally, a Blue in the semis again!

Group III (Juba Bane, Maximus, Phaethoon, Caesar)

These quarters appear to be highly polarised. Two Blues against two Reds. Factio Russata has the most supporters, due to the dwindling results of factio Veneta, but Veneta has found its second breath, so it seems, now that Myrtilos has finally proven himself to be worthy of the semis again. As the four chariots start, Phaethoon of Russata and Caesar of Veneta both go for the lead. They both employ violence. Caesar is especially frustrated because he has, up until now, collected zero points. Phaethoon, on the other hand, wants to redeem himself and show his sponsor, Alexander Dionysius, that he is worthy to compete. The two brawling charioteers however are soon seperated by Maximus, who has slowly become Russata's new star. With amazing speed he passes the other contenders and takes the lead. Meanwhile Juba Bane has an incident with the walls all by himself, which luckily proves to be relatively harmless. Oh, and there Caesar befalls the same unfortunate accident as Victorinus: he crashes against the spina. Given the fact that Juba Bane cannot catch up with the other two, this means both Reds go into the semis! The circus is too small to contain Russata's joy. Factio Veneta is disappointed again.

Group IV (Callidus, Morgareth, Bibax)

All three factiones in this quarter are already represented in the semis, but an extra charioteer wouldn't hurt, of course! The three final quarter finalists are the well-known Callidus of the Reds, Morgareth, champion of factio Aurata and finally the almost caricaturally bad Bibax, whose only virtue lies in his violence. According to experts and bookmakers Bibax makes little chance against the other two. And first impressions seem to confirm this as Callidus and Morgareth thunder across the racing track together, side by side, united in a struggle for the first spot. It's clear that Bibax is not going to play much of a role in this spectacle, unless one of the two others crashes. First it's Morgareth who leads, but then it's Callidus. And then it's Morgareth again! The "Infernerator" crosses the finishing line first, followed closely by Callidus. Both Reds and Golden are satisfied. All of factio Russata is going to the semis, and the two top drivers of factio Aurata, too.

SEMI FINALS

Postby Gnaeus Dionysius Draco on Thu Nov 20, 2003 5:02 pm

SEMI FINALS

Group I (Romulus, Myrtilos, Maximus, Callidus)

This promises to be an exciting semi-final! Erstwhile rivals Romulus and Callidus face off once again. Although Callidus' popularity has been slumping a little his achievements remain stable. Perhaps he could once again show some of his former glory today? Myrtilos of factio Veneta is having his first semi in a long time. However, will he be able to withstand the speed and fury of his opponents? Fourth contender is Maximus of the Reds, hence the circus is filled with red flags, caps and tunicae. The Purpurea supporters have come in great numbers as well, as usual. A tiny corner of the circus is occupied by a few fanatic Blue fans. They seem to be a bit caught in the middle between Russata and Purpurea. The rivalry runs deep.

There they go! In an authoritarian manner, Romulus demonstrates his superior driving skills and blasts away as if shot from a bow. A loud "aaahh" goes through the circus as he so virtuously makes that curve. Myrtilos and Callidus are hot on his tail, however. In round two Callidus manages to get past his blue contender and soon Maximus, coming from an unhappy last position, also passes the leader of factio Veneta. Callidus is closing in on Romulus. Maximus is just one step behind. Romulus can hear the two Reds breathing down his neck and oh! There the "Celeres" and "Celetior" collide and Callidus is just in time to save his chariot from breaking up against the spina. Taking advantage of this, Maximus passes both and assumes the lead! Much to the dismay of the few Blue fans, Myrtilos can't keep up and falls behind more and more. Only in the eighth round Romulus manages to pass Maximus swiftly, after great difficulties. The "Celetior" has been damaged and so the distance between Callidus and Romulus increases. As they finish, Romulus and Maximus go to the finals!

Group II (Damnator, PD Robur, Phaethoon, Morgareth)

This is Phaethoon's first semi. He doesn't need to defend his team's honour and this takes considerable pressure away. Damnator and Morgareth are veterans. Aurata and Albata have recently become very intense enemies and riots have erupted before the races just outside the circus. An unknown gang has threatened to burn down the circus, should Damnator of the Whites harm either Morgareth or Publius Decius Robur. Damnator does not look swayed by these threats. The two Aureii don't look particulary impressed either.

And off they go! Oh! Already in the first few metres the drama begins as Phaethoon lashes out furiously at PD Robur, who was just passing him. Robur is struck in the face and with a terrible cry, is cast out of his "Quadriga Ignis". The Reds didn't expect this from Phaethoon. It seems as if he's possessed by Greek fever! The Golden fans shout their indignation. The Whites have a good laugh as they see Damnator has quickly left Phaethoon behind him and is now closing in on Morgareth. Morgareth however is reconfirming his good reputation as an excellent charioteer. With driving techniques he allegedly learned in the Far East he manages to stay one step ahead of Damnator all the time. Although the driver of the "Fulmen Draconis" becomes increasingly frustrated, it's to no avail. Morgareth comes first, followed by Damnator. Phaethoon had five minutes of fame but is too late to secure a spot in the finals.

FINALS

Postby Gnaeus Dionysius Draco on Thu Nov 20, 2003 5:03 pm

FINALS (Romulus, Maximus, Morgareth, Damnator)

This is it, ladies and gentlemen. Will factio Albata secure its almost certain victory? Or will Romulus yet surprise us and keep things exciting up until the very end of the racing season? In any case, neither of the four finalists has got something to lose, and neither of them need to be afraid. On paper they can all compete against each other. Technically Romulus is still the best driver but we all know that Damnator's fury and force made up for his lack of technique several times. And then there are Maximus and Morgareth, solid, fast-paced drivers that never give into the opposition.

Yes, they're gone! What magnificent speeds! Romulus and Maximus take the lead. There appears to be no difference in their fluid racing style. We all knew Maximus was good, but this good? Wow. Damnator seems to be locked in last position. Morgareth and his "Infernerator" are slowly speeding up. In the spina however, during the second round, Damnator catches up with his rival and begins to drive him against the wall. He grins meanly at the leader of the Golden Horde as he helplessly disappears in a trail of splinters, his span running across the tracks by themselves. Factio Aurata hits the roof. Albata fans are lucky to have the Reds between them, and vice versa. Romulus and Maximus remain locked in battle for the first spot, with Damnator slowly gaining ground. Purpurea wants Romulus to win so bad. They don't need a confirmation of his finesse, they need to beat Damnator! Russata on the other hand would finally like a victory! And the Whites want to be released from their insecurity over Damnator's winning the season.

The three chariots are now neck to neck. The white, chromatic "Fulmen Draconis", the colourful yet sobre "Celeres" and finally the red, modernly designed "Centaurus". Romulus passes Damnator. Damnator passes Romulus. Maximus passes both and then falls back immediately. One horse in his span is acting up. Taking advantage of the confusion, Damnator gives the "Celeres" a violent push. The span spins off against the wall but is not broken. Romulus and Maximus are catching up with Damnator. Maximus narrowly escapes Damnator's fierce whip but it's too late for the already damaged "Celeres". Another hard push pushes the Purple champion against the wall and terminally damages his chariot. However, because of this fight Maximus seizes the opportunity to increase his lead. And during a rather unspectacular last round, while the Reds are going insane with joy and the Purple crowd is mourning, Maximus wins the Ludi Plebeii!

Congratulations to Maximus and his sponsor, Tiberius Dionysius Draco.

Salvete amici!

A round-up of the results and what they mean for the tables. To answer the most important question first: Romulus can still become this year's champion. The difference in points between Romulus and Damnator is 17, which is enough to bridge for the sole Purple champion. It's even more exciting in the factiones tables, where four factiones still have a chance of becoming this year's winning team.

Now, back to these races:

Maximus +22!
Callidus +4
Phaethoon +4
RUSSATA +30

Factio Russata has done extremely well, gaining a beautiful 30 points and thus becoming third. All Red charioteers either rise or remain stable in the rankings. Their first champion, Maximus, rises to the fourth spot after long and hard work. It seems that hard work pays off, after all. Although Russata cannot win the individual tables anymore, they make a decent chance of winning the team tables if they continue like this.

Morgareth +14
PD Robur +3
Indutiomarus +0
AURATA +17

As expected, Aurata once again did a fine job. Good enough to remain secure and show they're a dominant factio, but not good enough to bring a severe blow to the domination of Albata and Purpurea's star drivers. The competition is still very tight, they only differ three points with factio Albata and are still second in this ranking. Morgareth and PD Robur remain fairly stable. Indutiomarus, although technically a good racer, does not advance once again.

Romulus +17
PURPUREA +17

Factio Purpurea gains as many points as factio Aurata, but it's all Romulus' work. This proves that he is still one of the best charioteers out there. He is this year's four-fold champion and is still able to beat his arch-enemy Damnator. We'll see what happens in the last ludi!

Damnator +16
Bibax +0
ALBATA +16

Bibax is once again disappointing and remains stuck in the basement of the rankings, on 13th position, preceding only Caesar of Veneta, who has 0 points. Damnator remains first with a comfortable gap, but nonetheless danger still lurks. He cannot be certain of his victory. There is even more uncertainty in the team tables. Albata is first, but Aurata is closing in fast.

Myrtilos +2
Caesar +0
Juba Bane +0
VENETA +2

What can we say? It's the umpteenth disappointing races for the Blues. Only Myrtilos gained a scarce three points. Caesar has been unable to lift his curse and remains stuck with 0 points at the bottom of the rankings. Juba Bane's luck seems used up as well. Veneta has no chance of winning either title this year, but they still have a chance of at least redeeming themselves in the last races.

Hannibal +0
Victorinus +0
PRAESINA +0

Factio Praesina has had its worst races since it came into existence in the SVR. They gained zero points since none of their racers made it into the semis. Surely they won't be the losers this year but a feeling of disappointment about what it could or might have been is fitting here. Let's hope they'll do better next year and gain some points in the coming races!

Excellent, excellent, factio Veneta has now established itself as the underdog....now is the time to change tactics, bet everything on our own chariots, win massive amounts of money and leave for Samos...
