Salvete!

Only three weeks after the ludi Solis Invicti but a year has passed and the slates are clean. There is no second first time and the next races will only be in the beginning of March to celebrate the Roman new year.

So we have 15 racers, 6 factiones and much more possible outcomes.

But let's start now!

QUARTERS

Group I (Damnator, Morgareth, Romulus, Maximus)

Ironically, the first group of the quarters features all previous champions of 2756. But only two can go into the semis and all of them know it. Romulus looks serene but is ambitious to win. Morgareth is still a bit queasy about his new tactics and Maximus is as ardent as ever. Russata will not be second this year. Everyone has of course been looking forward to Damnator's first race after his long celebration at the Albata headquarters. And there they go! Romulus takes the lead but his advance is not enough to shake the others off. Look at that speed! Truly, these are four champions.

Just as they come thundering down the tracks for the second round Damnator bangs against Morgareth's chariot, the "Infernerator", which has been heavily armoured. The Golden chariot is unswayed. The crowd gasps in amazement and Damnator bellows in frustration as a second push also fails to bring Morgareth out of balance. Maximus tries to take advantage of this situation and passes the other two. However, Damnator quickly uses his whip to pull his Red opponent back. Maximus is flung out of his chariot with such violence that Morgareth has to duck, lest he gets the flailing charioteer in his face. The "Fulmen Draconis" makes haste but is unable to stop Romulus from winning these quarters.

1. Romulus
2. Damnator
3. Morgareth
4. Maximus was ejected from his chariot by Damnator

Group II (Bibax, Indutiomarus, Hannibal, Myrtilos)

Factio Veneta smells an opportunity to redeem itself. Myrtilos faces off against opponents who are not impossible to beat. Although Indutiomarus of Aurata is a good racer on chariot he always suffers from ill luck. Hannibal is a bit of an irregular and Bibax is considered to be one of the worst charioteers ever. Let's hope this will not be a fiasco for Veneta.

They start and Myrtilos takes the lead! The regrouped and recovered Blue fans go out of their minds! However, soon they realise they've been a bit to premature with their joy as Myrtilos' chariot seems to hit an object on the tracks and, while still accelerating, slips of course and crashes violently against the walls as the other three mercilessly pass him. It's a sad day once more for the Blues. Indutiomarus, formerly the strongest man on the tracks, comes from between his Green and White opponent and takes the lead. Hannibal is hot on his tracks while Bibax, who is sobre for once, tries to catch up but cannot gain enough speed to compete with them and even scrapes against the spina. Hannibal ignores the pleas of his fans to use his whip as the sun shines in his eyes too brightly and Indutiomarus' gold plated armour reflects it harshly. In the end, they cross the finishing line in that order.

1. Indutiomarus
2. Hannibal
3. Bibax
4. Myrtilos had a collision with the walls

Groups III and IV: tomorrow.

Group III (Publius Decius Robur, Victorinus, Phaethoon, Juba Bane)

The third group also consists of four representants of different factiones. Publius Decius Robur has always been tipped as a potential champion and now he's facing opponents who are not among the strongest. Victorinus was promising in the beginning but failed to fulfill the great expectations while Phaethoon and Juba Bane have always been lingering on the edges.

Ah, yes, as expected they start out with PD Robur in pole position! Smoothly the four charioteers go round the spina and Victorinus' "Res Publica" takes the lead. The speed is less than in the previous quarters but it's still enjoyable enough. Phaethoon comes on strong down the straight lines and lashes out at Robur with his infamous flaming whip. Yes, after Indutiomarus changed his tactics this Greek mercenary is reportedly the strongest charioteer in the circus. By the Gods! Robur's arm is on fire! The Aurata fans are in shock as Robur flails and tries to put out the fire, Phaethoon rams his opponent and lashes out again. PD Robur is eliminated. Victorinus leads. Juba Bane is far behind and can't catch up with either charioteer. But then fate strikes again and snatches a certain victory out of Praesina's hands: Victorinus takes a curve to narrowly and smashes against the spina... The two least likely charioteers pass into the semis.

1. Phaethoon
2. Juba Bane
3. Victorinus slammed into the spina
4. Publius Decius Robur was put on fire by Phaethoon

Group IV (Pericolosus, Callidus, Caesar)

This quarter should be very interesting. Callidus changed his tactics and rumour has it that he is now as good as, if not better than his old rival Romulus. Latter one passes into the semis so Callidus should do just as good. Caesar has made it known that he's changed his tactics and statistics and will restore factio Veneta's lost glory. We hope so for him. Pericolosus debuted in the ludi Solis Invicti and showed promising results. Let's see if he can live up to Albata's expectations.

As they go it's unclear who leads, and that for about the whole round! First it's Callidus, then Caesar, then Pericolosus and then Caesar again. Definitely Caesar is now embodying the desperate hope of factio Veneta. Sure they have Juba Bane in the semis but everyone knows that was luck. Callidus is as furiously fast as ever. But by the third round both men are forced to let go as Pericolosus clearly becomes the leader and increases the gap. What speeds! The circus crowd has never seen a charioteer this fast. He seems to fly over the tracks. Callidus and Caesar are not left puffing air, however, as they are locked in battle over the second place. In the end, it's Callidus who comes second. Sorry for Veneta. Perhaps some other time.

1. Pericolosus
2. Callidus
3. Caesar

SEMIS

Group I (Romulus, Hannibal, Phaethoon, Pericolosus)

Greetings! It seems all factiones are represented in the semis. That's a while ago. This first semi promises to be an exciting one. Three violent charioteers and one gracious example of piety. Or has Romulus' luck with the Gods run out? As they start, it seems not. He takes the lead convincingly. Hannibal tries to keep up with him but is forced to let go already on the next straight line. Pericolosus, the White revelation of these ludi, races past Phaethoon and soon past Hannibal as well. His turning technique is nervous and cross but his speed is magnificent!

In the fourth round Hannibal and Phaethoon, who have been prodding each other and shouting threats to one another, engage in battle. Hannibal is first to deliver the fatal strike by raining a few blows with his whip down on the reins and hands of the "Hamaksa Purdaes" charioteer. However Phaethoon, in falling back, lashes out uncontrollably at Hannibal, whose chariot is set on fire. Hannibal jumps out of the "Elephant" before he himself is consumed by the flames. What spectacle! In the meanwhile, the impossible has happened: Romulus has been passed by Pericolosus on pure speed and they cross the finishing line in that order.

1. Periclosus
2. Romulus
3. Hannibal was counterstruck by Phaethoon
4. Phaethoon was eliminated by Hannibal

Group II (Callidus, Damnator, Indutiomarus, Juba Bane)

The second group here features three fast charioteers and a slowpoke. However, since Damnator uses violence, Veneta has a chance of passing into the finals - the first time in a very, very long while. The start indicates good chances for Indutiomarus, who is in pole position, chased by Callidus. Yes, the Reds are very eager these days. It's clear from the start that Juba Bane and his "Aenglish Wildfire" are far behind. The Blue fans are leaving the circus and have decided to get drunk in the local taberna. So it's between Callidus, Damnator and Indutiomarus.

It's been a long time since we've seen such tight competition. The fans of the three factiones, who are normally among the noisiest, are deadly silent. This is simply too exciting! Indutiomarus is passed by Callidus but both are passed by Damnator. On the straight lines however the other two get everything out of their chariots they can. Callidus surely has been training but there he almost hits the spina. The back of the "Celeres" scraps against the deadly marble and wood splinters fly into the cold sands of the arena. A shive goes through the Red fans. Damnator and Indutiomarus pass him. We see the nervousness on Indutiomarus' face and Damnator looking grim. It's the last round. Callidus comes on strong. He passes Indutiomarus! The distance between him and Damnator shrinks. And instants before the finish, Callidus passes Damnator and comes first.

1. Callidus
2. Damnator
3. Indutiomarus
4. Juba Bane

FINALS (Callidus, Damnator, Pericolosus, Romulus)

Pericolosus has entered his first finals. For the first time, two Whites are in the finals. Their opponents are the inevitable Romulus of Purpurea and his just as inevitable opponent Callidus. Now is the moment of truth: we will see who is quicker, Romulus or Callidus. Like thunder and lightning the four chariots start and gain speed quickly. Romulus, who takes the lead with his "Celeres", is soon passed by Periclosus in his "Flora Mortis" and Callidus in his "Celetior" however. The Reds are cheering. Callidus confidently assumes the lead now, which leaves Damnator and Romulus in the back. But Damnator has also modified his chariot and improved his racing abilities. He's still hungry to win and mercilessly begins to whip Romulus. The Purple prodigy is not swayed at first but then begins to zigzag through the tracks to avoid Damnator's brutality, which slows him down considerably, while the other two increase their advance. Pericolosus is now catching up with Callidus. To the dismay of the Reds and the pleasure of the Whites, fate strikes twice at the same time: Pericolosus passes Callidus self-confidently. A pseudo-debutant may become champion! And there Damnator slays Romulus. The pious charioteer rolls out of the "Celeres" and keeps lying still on the sands. The peace-loving Purpurea fans are shocked. Callidus is trying his best. Tears of anger and bitterness are rolling over his cheeks as he achieves speeds higher than Romulus could ever have imagined, speeds with which he would have won all races... all races but this one. As Pericolosus crosses the finishing line, the circus explodes in a White joy. Callidus immediately retreats to the Russata headquarters, followed by his most loyal fans who console their hero. Damnator is third but doesn't mind. He smiles grimly as factio Albata has retained its number one position. They are stronger than ever.

Congratulations to Pericolosus and his owner, Ariadne Dionysia Veneta.

When will the next Ludi be held, mi Draco?

Morgareth is eager to avenge his 'misfortune' in the late Carmentalia...

Untill we meet again in the Colloseum,
I salute thee.

Next ludi are around the first of March :).

By the way, the colosseum was not a circus but an amphitheatre 8). Unless you intend on slaughtering me there in the arena.

Now that you mention it, o Gnae,

We have our races, but couldn't we also have our own gladiators? That way, I might be able to meet you for a beatin' or two in our (virtual) arena...

Statistics and tactics, maybe add a weapon-of-choice option into the fray. Just a thought.

Morituri te salutant.
Not me, that is

Salve Duelli

To hold gaming tournaments Quake-style could prove to be difficult because of the differences in time zones we all have to deal with.

I think it should be similar to the chariot racing system. But let us first hear what the other sodales, and in particular Draco, has to say, shall we?

But it is nice to know that someone is supportive of my suggestion :)

I greet you

Salvete,

I must say I have, for some months now, such a gladiator game format ready. I will dig it up and ask some of you to participate in a test session, to see if it works properly. It looks much like our chariot races: you can pick a gladiator type and add statistics such as speed etc. And it also involves some dice throwing.

I will try to test it as soon as possible, so we can have some great virtual combat in the SVR!

Allright !

Great minds think alike, don't they?

If there is some testin' to be done, let me know, I will gladly participate and hopefully walk away from them without a scratch.
