So, Who's who?

Postby Anonymous on Sun Jan 16, 2005 11:11 am

Since I just started actually posting on this forum (be proud, Draco), I'd love to know whom I'm talking to...
So, pretend you're back in high school and introduce yourself *prettyplease*

My real name is Katrien Wemel, I'm from Belgium and I study German Languages at the Univers. of Gent (moeha). On paper I'm 19 years old, but I like to lie about my age. (because it's fun)
I spend my time writing (I'm fond of drama), watching tv, loving my boyfriend, singing classical music or musical songs and/or hanging around in a theatre company (mostly on stage)
I guess that's all there is to my life history.

So, who's next?

Hi Lucia,

my real name is Svenja Grosser and I'm from Hamburg, Germany. According to Draco so far the only native speaking German at this forum which is quite strange though because in Germany there are many remnants of the Roman Empire and in the South there should be even reenactor groups and others who should have an affinity to Ancient Rome. So it's strange that me, from Germania Magna, an area which was never conquered by the Romans.

I am 33 years old and work as a foreign language secretary for an export company. Besides for my interest in Ancient Rome I practise Wing Tsun (which is a Martial Art related to Kung Fu), like foreign languages (I speak German, English, French and Spanish, as well as a little bit Norwegian and forgot most of my Latin I had to learn at school), reading, meeting friends, watching movies, my two cats Ramses and Kleopatra.

Salvete Lucia et Cleopatra,

I guess the two of you know me already.

A part from being an overall knowledge seeker, I am sometimes also a pedantic asshole :P. I also orchestrate the ludi circenses here. Come to think of it, the last ludi passed 6 days ago and I still haven't written the report.

Anyhow, who's next?

Salvete!

As most of you will know my name is Mauk, and I'm studying Orthopedagogy. I'm mainly philospher and politician actually, and obsessed by Berlin. And that's the reason why you don't hear me so often here the last days, because I'm making a Praktikum here in Berlin. In March I'm back in Belgium.

so, tschüss!

Salvete

As some of you know me, my real name is Mike. I have studied visual arts in Ghent, and I'm still doing that, but more focusing on painting than sculpting. I'm no sculptor, only a painter in heart and bones.
I like reading books on pagan religions, history, the occult, also fiction (mainly horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, adventure) which is also my preferences for tv and movies although documentaries do not fall in that category. I guess that is all.

Salvete omnes,

I'm Daniel and I live in sunny Britannia, and my interest is mostly in political and military history spanning the entire era of recorded history, from the first civilisations through the Roman Republic, Byzantium, Aragon, Poland, and various others, to the power politics of the 19th and 20th centuries. Just to keep life interesting, I'm also attempting to teach myself Polish.

I'm insufferably insociable and have all the facial expression of the world poker champion. I do, however, know how to dance wildly and to make dry, ironic remarks. Is that enough random facts? :)

Tall order

Postby Aldus Marius on Mon Jan 17, 2005 9:55 am

Ave, Lucia Dionysia, et Salvete omnes:

There's a Bible verse in the Book of Job (quite a few of them, actually) that goes something like "Who put the swiftness in the limbs of a stallion, or the wind in his mane?" Just such a big job is the summing-up of Marius. I've never seen it done; I'm not sure I could do it myself.

I may be known 'well-enough for starters' by my Profile here; it sketches my name, current location, and chief interests. (And yes, I am having my name legally changed to "Marius Peregrine"; so what it is now doesn't matter.) My .sig block, my Web site (called The Roman Outpost; find it at http://labienus.home.texas.net/RomanOutpost), and my large-ish body of material here will all enlighten the newcomer as to various facets of my being. You can actually go to that same Profile and click to read all 400+ of my posts here; it'll even list the first few lines of each one, so you can tell which ones'll be worthwhile.

But if any or all of that is too labor-intensive, you can always get to know me the hard way: By interacting with me for a while and seeing for yourself just what manner of beast this Marius is. Talk to me, reply to things I write, tell me how you liked the Outpost--or anything else you might have something to say about. Ask questions--I love explaining stuff. Be patient; I have several middle-sized handicaps that put all together mean I don't get back with people as quickly as I'd like. Don't feel the need to be delicate with me; I'm retired U.S. Air Force and a Desert Storm veteran, I've heard and seen lots worse! Never abuse an animal anywhere I'm going to hear about it, which means most of the Southwestern U.S. Respect my silences; we desert rats, we prairie people, need them. And understand that, if anything I write seems offensive, I have not meant it that way; my social skills having gone the way of my mental health a few years ago, I cannot always gauge my effect on others.

Also: I am very playful! You Have Been Warned! >({|;-)

I say this thing to people who ask me to teach them Latin: "I ain't got much, but I'll share!" That could, indeed, be my motto in the Societas, about many things. I am always happy to share.

Satis?

In amicitia,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

Salvete Lucia et omnes

Hm, and here I thought I was the only pedantic a-hole in the place, mi Draco!

Highschool was so long ago I forget most of it. I am Giovangelo, or Gianni to most, and somewhere beyond 50, I don't keep close track, but still a youngster compared to Servilius Fidenas.

Locate, I was happy to read your Deutsch (Cleopatra, it's really poor, isn't it?) I mean it would have to be poor for me to understand it. I have not spoken any German since I was a very small child when I would spend summer with some German friends, and I have never learned to read any German. I can read Italian more than speak it anymore. Latin I studied in highschool over 35 years ago, and it shows. I forget nearly all the Polish I once spoke, except for some choice words, and forgot most of the Mandarin I once spoke, and some would say I have forgotten much of my English as well, but then, when you haven't a voice much of the time...

I come originally from Cleveland, Ohio in the US and now live nearby there again, after having lived for a while among goat-ropers in Texas and some other types in Arizona. I was once a soldier, a surveyor, a federal worker and some other things, eventually becoming a restaurant owner, before retiring. In the army I served as an intelligence analyst, and was injured, which has since forced me into an early retirement. I don't dance any more, and my singing voice, when I have any voice, isn't much. Along the way I became a widower, and did manage to dance my way into the heart of another lady with whom I have been married for over thirty years. I have had a daughter and five sons, only my two youngest sons surviving, the youngest currently in the army himself.

And university I attended a few times, in between things, and picked up two or three degrees, one of them a BA in History. Reading, I don't know if I enjoy it, I just do a lot of reading, always have. Rarely any fiction, mostly history, comparative mythology and religion. Those subjects being fiction enough for me. For enjoyment I like to pester Draco, visit museums, bother librarians with requests for rare books, do a little painting or gardening, chase away cats who scaulk around my bird-feeders, sing in a very horrid voice, when I have a voice. I prefer films from the 1930's, variety in my music (Benny Goodman, not Glenn Miller; Mozart more than Beethovan; lots of Blues; Sinatra and lately a lot of No Doubt, Evanescence, Tool, Three Doors Down, oh and a little Pink, too, but Eric Clapton is my favorite, followed by the Beatles and Elvis). Television I rarely watch except to view a film video. I grew up on radio, we didn't have television when I was young, well, my grandfather did but it was this huge box with a very tiny screen and Popeye was the only thing worth watching. And radio, I can still remember when there was no such thing as Rock-N-Roll. The biggest influence in my life I think I would have to say was Bugs Bunny, a personal hero, because he always took on the big guys, like Draco, annoyed them with questions until he made them look like maroons.

These days I seem to spend a lot of time online, more than I think I should, but I am unable to get around as I once could. So I research online, and do some writing, involved with the religio Romana mostly, and do a little teaching when asked. I use to be involved in politics, rarely anymore, but still am an active member of the ACLU and NOW. And I still have my license as a minister, which I rarely employ now except to chase away missionaries when they knock at my door. I think the marriage of Silvanus and Maia that we performed in SVR was the last time I conducted a wedding ceremony. I have the pleasure of not having to put up with anyone I don't want to (except the occasional doctor prodding at me and wondering why I am still alive), so that I can be as reclusive or as sociable as I please, and that is a nice sense of freedom.

Valete optime

I think Locatus did a good job with his German esp. when taking into consideration that he's more speaking it than writing.

Locate, stay in Berlin and I'll come and visit you. Haven't been there for ages and just need a reason to see that nice city again. And if the new high speed train route works and the train is on time it takes only 1.5 hrs to get there from Hamburg. Also, bis bald :-)

Postby Publius Dionysius Mus on Tue Jan 18, 2005 3:50 pm

Salvete!

Publius Dionysius Mus speaking, also known as Dennis Temmerman. I live in Evergem, a town just north of the beautiful medieval city of Ghent. I study History at the university of Ghent (specializing in Classical History of course..., and loving it!).

I am now in my last year, and I am planning to study Archaeology for another two years (I like it, it gives me another Master, and I don't see myself going to work in a few months...). I am a rather lazy person, but the advantage is that I do not know the words stress or haste - "Festina lente" is a nice motto).

My last year, so this means I am working very hard on my thesis (term paper), which has to be around 500 pages long (I am not going for less!). I am writing about the Roman Provincial coinage of Septimius Severus in Korinth, Peloponnesos, Phrygia and Syria. And this has also got me very into numismatics, so I see a new hobby coming up for me!

I am also a member of the Belgian socialist party "sp.a" (yes, one of those who wants to make the world a better place for everyone!), and I would like to get involved in politics, of course starting at the local level.

These two activities take up most of my time, and what I have left of free time I spend mostly on music. My musical interests are mainly Heavy Metal and most of its spin-offs (power metal, gothic metal, some black metal, etc.), but recently I am getting more involved with the old blues and jazz, and classical music. Some of the music I like:
- Metal: Hammerfall, Rhapsody, In Extremo, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, White Skull, Dragonforce, Blind Guardian, Morgenstern, Lacrimosa, Nightwish, Mago de Oz, Sonata Arctica, Ayreon, Dimmu Borgir, and much more.
- Blues: Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Muddy Waters and Eric Clapton. Still discovering the blues...
- Jazz: Glenn Miller, Django Reinhardt (from Belgium!), and still discovering more and more every day!
- Classical: Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, in fact everything that sounds good to me, but mostly baroque music.
And I also like old Flemish folk music, medieval music, bagpipe music, and Jaques Brel (The greatest Belgian ever!).

My other interests include reading (mostly History, but also Mario Puzo, Tolkien and Feist), movies (I really love Westerns and Gangster movies), and sports (soccer, cycling, rally and circuit racing, and swimming - a few years ago I swam in competition myself).

I still live with my parents, I have two sisters (20 and 18), and we have a lot of pets (two cats, three rabbits, fishes in cold and warm water, a whole cage full of birds, and a turtle).

Now you know everything, I think...

Valete bene!

Si vales, vere bene est.

Ah... what to say. My name is Merle, which I have always hated, so my friends usually call me Weasel. I am 60, not actually y choice, but the alternative seems dismal. The only benefit I have found so far is the free tuition at Rhode Island state instutions, thus I have returned for a 2nd degree in Film Studies at Rhode Island College. I already hold a B.A. in English from there, and a Master's in Black Studies/Comparative Literature based on a study of Juan Latino of Granada ca 1516-1594).
I expect to finish my film studies this fall and go on to a second M.A. in
Classics - in Film and Literature.

I prefer British and German Films. I have been studying a lot about documentary, especially British. I have really enjoyed my studies. My son also attends the same college.

My interests are literature, film, transportation (especially rail and marine) history, anything British. I like British cars, but drool over Minervas.
My favourite film seems to change frequently, but right now is Night Mail (1936). I enjoy science fiction, Helen MacInness, Dick Francis and Seamark, though most people have never heard of him.

This year I began keeping bees again after a 30+ year hiatus.

And fiend Mus, for me Festina lente is not a motto, but a way of life.

Salve Britannice,

I recently heard the reason they stopped making Minervas was because they didn't break down and as such, not enough new ones were sold 8).

And minerva's were Belgian cars. We don't have any Belgian cars now anymore, except for the exotic Gillet Vertigo, which holds the world record in acceleration 0-100 km/h (an official 3,36 seconds I think).

And each Minerva was reliable, and to prove that the factory drove with each new car from Belgium to Rome and back... before it was given to the new owner...

As good a place as any...

Postby Anonymous on Thu Jan 27, 2005 7:05 am

Greetings!

This looks like as good a place as any to post a hello to you all :)

I'm Harry (not very hairy though) and I'm 20 yrs old and I live in Wisconsin. I am very interested in antiquity, the people teir beliefs, culture, politics and so on and so forth. Events in the so called Holy Land interest me too, I'm no scholar, I'm not in school even but I like to learn about ancient history. Someways I guess the ancients were better; they weren't perfect, I don't say that they were perfect but I think people now in the 21st century could use a little (or a lot) of what ancient Greeks and Romans and Phonecians and others had - even what people had 200 yrs ago. Not to rant, there are amazing things in todays world but people tend to bitch and take them for granted.

Someone I chatted with told me about this site and I liked it. I found a list of books here about Roman religion - I've been teaching myself about it recently so I'm happy to get a larger reading list.

Don't know what else to say except: nice to be here :D

Salve Numeri !

Welcome, nice to see you here, Harry. Uhm, you wouldn't have any odd scars on your forehead by chance? :? No matter the age or level of education of anyone here that you should meet, we are all students here in our own ways. Soon enough our Latin Inquisition (Gnaeus Draco, not Tiberius) will have you brushing up on your conjugations, even if you never studied Latin. Marius will try to spin you into one of his many stories. Atticus will always find some odd story to intrigue your imagination. Curio, I don't know what wind is blowing up his kilt from day to day. And that is just some of the sodales who have been here a while. Our newer members each have their own interests and knowledge to add into the mix. The Religio Romana, well if you have questions I am one who is likely to offer an answer. Philosophy, history, the Holy Lands, various aspects of antiquity, there is usually someone here who shares your interest and may offer some suggestions. And if someone else has a question you might address please do so. Let us know what you are reading, films you view, music you listen to, thoughts you have, as that is all part of our little societas, too. Welcome to the Societas Via Romana!
