Salvete,

Does anyone have channels not dedicated entirely to sensationalist rubbish and reality tv? That's pretty much the extent of British terrestrial channels now...

Salve Curio,

Here in continental Europe, we have Arte, a French-German cultural channel. Sometimes they have interesting (historical) documentaries, historical films etc.

Belgian television is also poor on really interesting programs. We do have a 'middle brow' national channel called Canvas and they broadcast interesting documentaries now and then, but the strange thing is that Canvas is also the national sports channel, and that if - for example - one of our Belgian tennis players gets to the quarters in a tennis contest, the documentary planned for that evening is simply scrapped and replaced by the tennis match (the reverse - sports being scrapped for an important cultural event - never occurs) .

Here in Germany we also have the ZDF which shows sometimes on Sundays interesting documentaries, as well as of course Arte and also 3Sat.

But a specialized channel on documentaries like Discovery Channel etc. you could get only via pay TV :-(

Hannibal Documentary - and the Media

Postby Valerius Claudius Iohanes on Fri Mar 11, 2005 6:19 pm

Salvete omnes -

In the USA there is usually a free, on-the-airwaves public broadcasting station in most areas, but all the more specialized channels tend to be on cable. And they're doubly-paid for: one pays for cable or satellite, and then one has to sit thru the endless commercial advertisements as well. Yet cable TV seems to be the norm, and broadcast TV is just limping along after.

What's even funnier is that if you mention "Hannibal" to anyone here, they only think of Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of the fictional murderer, the Hannibal Lector character! They don't even know who Hannibal ipse was! It's amazing to me that the real Hannibal has not been the subject of a movie in recent years, especially after the success of Gladiator.

I have been trying to find an affordable copy of the 1960 Italian movie production of Hannibal, which starred Victor Mature. Do any of our European sodales know this film? I'm fifty years old now, and as a kid this movie impressed me a great deal - but most of you will be much younger.

Hannibal ad portas! You're right Claudius, it's a sad state American society has gotten into.

Salvete

well they are planning on making a movie on Hannibal Barca starring Vin Diesel as Hannibal. So we can only wait and see what the result will be like. I do hope that they plan on staying true to the facts that are availeble.
On another note: in the US, have they begun airing the miniseries on Hercules?

yep, the one and only. Appearently, Vin is using some of his own money to fund this project because studio exectives are not really convinced of making this movie. At least, that is what I heard.

Some more, this time from Yahoo, re both a Vin Diesel version, "Hannibal the Conqueror", and also an older project, a Denzel Washington retelling of Hannibal's story, tentatively called "The African".
