[Concilium] Concilium : working procedures and deadlines

Postby Quintus Pomponius Atticus on Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:26 pm

Salvete omnes,

Tomorrow, on the 15th of August, the 'Concilium Rei Publicae Constituendae' that will reform our Societas will begin its work.

The first thing we need to agree on is our internal procedures for discussion and - if necessary - voting. I think we should also fix an approximate deadline for the concilium's final report to the Comitia.

I propose the following :

*To order the discussion in a framework consisting of the following five topics.

-Identity, Nature and Goals of S.V.R.
-Members, Gentes and Provinciae
-Comitia, Magistratus & Senatus
-Collegia
-Other Issues

I propose simultaneous discussions to be held in all of them.

*To try to find an agreement as much as we can, but to decide on issues where an unsolvable disagreement continues to exist by open vote, with a regular majority (half + 1 of concilium members participating in the vote) as its counting basis.

*To fix an approximate deadline for reporting results to the Comitia on October 1 2005.

Awaiting your thoughts and comments,
Valete,

Framework of discussion

Postby Aldus Marius on Mon Aug 15, 2005 3:55 am

Salve, Attice bon'...

I like it; looks good.

One comment: It is possible that the discussion about the Collegia (specifically Rectores) may bleed into the one about the Senate and Comitia a bit. There has been one proposal to have the Rectores be the Senate. So it's a good thing we'll be looking at all of these things at once; they all live in the same country, so to speak.

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

It might be useful to start separate topica on each category to be discussed. In addition, it might be useful to have a general category to deal with the overarching structure of SVR, lest we get lost in details. The first posting could be a summary of each of the proposals which were posted in the Comitia.

I will try to summarize things said about each topic as we proceed. I'll do my best to present the first summary a.s.a.p.

Salvete omnes,

This all seems good. However, a Concilium crippled by absences will not be overly useful; perhaps each member could confirm that they're willing to serve in the Concilium for this time?

Salvete

Perhaps we should first have the summaries of each topic that was going to be discussed here, posted first, than proceed to those who are willing to serve in this concilium. You can count me in.

Salve Orce,

I think there's no need to discuss the composition of the concilium anymore, as this has been arranged in the Comitia already. In the 'It's all yours' topic there, the following ten eligible members have offered their services :

Quintus Pomponius Atticus
Lucius Marius Peregrinus
Marcus Horatius Piscinus
Primus Aurelius Tergestus
Quintus Aurelius Orcus
Marcus Scribonius Curio
Gnaeus Dionysius Draco Invictus
Marcus Pomponius Lupus
Cleopatra Aelia
Q. Valerius Scerio (who was offered the 10th seat by consul Coruncanius)

Silly question

Postby Aldus Marius on Mon Aug 15, 2005 6:59 pm

Salvete collegae,

I have a silly question. Maybe it's just my penchant for nouns talking; then again, maybe I'm not the only one who'd like or need to know:

Most of us are getting called decemviri...but what's the term for Domina Aelia?

(The ancients didn't leave us any clues, did they?) >({|;-)

Earlier I had a problem accessing this concilium forum. Perhaps it would be a good idea to "call roll" to make sure that all ten members are able to read the discussions here.

Therefore, please indicate that you are ades!

As long as you are talking about all ten of us, just call it the decemviri. If you just talk about me as a single person I suggest decemuxor or decemconiux. uxor and coniux both meaning spouse and would be therefore on the same language level as vir. mulier or femina would sound too simple and domina to elevated. If you have other proposals just let me know. I really don't mind what you call me. Or just address me by the name.

Mari, anyhow I think it's nice of you that you thought about me. :-)

Adsum!, and an inspiration

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Aug 16, 2005 10:27 pm

Salvete omnes...

Adsum! (I know y'all knew that, but one must comply with an Admin request...)

Domina, I had an idea: How'd you like to be a decemvira?

There is Romance-language, if not quite Latin, precedent: In Venezuela I once had a Fierce Toy Poodle, and an uncle who was a bullfighter. In no time at all he discovered that she would charge at the cape, all intent on ripping the thing to shreds. Made her handy for practice; and it also earned her a new Cognomen, courtesy of my Grandma: La Torita!

(Hey, they're our endings; we can do with 'em what we like... Besides: the Brassworks charges me by the letter on these nameplates.) >({|;-)

Salvete omnes,

Most definitely present, although still trying to cope with the transition from Polish to English and Latin... :D

So far, we have not heard from Piscinus or Gn. Draco. I will write PMs to them if they do not pop up in the next few days.

I'd like to move that after we finish with our deliberations as a Concilium we make those deliberations available to any soldales who would like to see them. In other words, that we move all this material to the Comitia. We could do so either before or after the vote on the new regulae, whatever everyone thinks would be best. I just want to make the process of how we reached the proposed regulae transparent.

I also don't want to forget any of the good ideas that are sprouting here!

Marius posts a 'Me Too'

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Aug 23, 2005 9:37 pm

Salve, mi Tergeste,

I second the motion! This, for me, is basically the same flavor as the U.S. Constitutional Convention in 1787; whose deliberations, while conducted behind closed doors (so the delegates could get anything done), were made public during the ratification process. I am too much the historian to want to keep anything out of the archives. The Sodales have entrusted us with this duty; holding up our end should include showing them what we did with that trust, and why.

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.

I know that this might not be the topic to discuss this in, but if we're talking about SVR's history and some written record of it... I'd like to volunteer for that. Mus started an annales project some 2,5 years ago but it never got much further than SVR's foundation (which he was appropriately nagged for each time we saw him). It could also be a cooperative effort, of course.
